October 2002

It's beautiful outside my place. All day at school I find myself wishing that I were out in the meadows instead of sitting in class. I can get to the paths in the woods, now, too. I can't help it; I'm addicted to walking along by myself, just looking at things and singing if I feel like it...

Do you want jewels?
I have them.
There is gold and moonstone in the sky,
There is ruby in the flowers,
Peridot in the grass,
Topaz in the dirt.
Do you want power?
The land is mine to destroy,
Or to shape,
And I move its bones.
Do you want love?
There is blood in the red of the poison ivy,
Whispering in the creek
And cradling in the branches of my tree.
Do you want me?
I am in my meadow;
Come and find me.

When I was a kid, the reason I liked October was Halloween. We'd decorate the house and figure out our costumes and go to the parade and go trick-or-treating. And of course, get candy. But we never decorate the house anymore. I've learned to like nature's decorations better, anyhow. And you want ghostly? Okay, I've been finding animal bones all over the meadow. So there's October.

Jiru
The girl left all her hope behind
And watched as all the years went by
In sunshine and in rain.
The girl left all her song behind
And listened as the hawks screamed by
In stillness and in gale.
The girl left all her life behind
And breathed as all the earth rolled by
In darkness and in light.
The girl left all her dance behind
And lay still as the grass swayed by
In sunset and in dawn.
The girl left all herself behind
And uprooted as the silk hung by,
And in the stillness, something grew.
