Tokyo - Kyoto: Wendesday, July 28th:

Early in the morning we transfered to the Tokyo Central Railroad station and left by the "Bullet" train "Kodama" for Kyoto, arriving just after lunch.

Had free afternoon in Kyoto to explore the city.

It only took 2.5 hours to get from Tokyo to Kyoto

Restraunt food display in window. Most of them had these fake food displays so you could see what they had on the menu.

Vending machines are all over Japan. Note the Ashai Beer. For 100 Yen you could have a good time.

Kyoto: Thursday, July 29th:

Went on tour to Heian Shrine, Nishi Honjai Temple Kiyomizu Temple, the Old Imperial Palace, the Gold Pavilion and Arachiyama Park.


Kyoto Imperial Palace Shizuko Mishima. The Japanese imperial family lived here before they moved to the Tokyo imperial Palace


The Heian Shrine Garden in central Kyoto is a favorite spot for feeding turtles and fish.

At Tofukuji Temple, the Sanmon Gate, which was completed in 1425, is considered the oldest and finest Zen gate in Japan.

Kyoto - Nara: Friday, July 30th:

Went to ancient Japanese capital at Nara. Saw Todaiji Temple, the largest wooden structure in the world. Went to Kasuga Shrine with it's 3,000 lanterns.


Nara City deer roam freely throughout the city, but most congregate near the sprawling central city park

The Buddhist Bell National Treasure hanging in its shelter on the grounds of Byodoin Temple, which was built in the 10th century.


The Ancient Capital of Nara and the Old Temple Todaiji. This is a front view of Daibutsu Den Building.


The 5 ft. tall Byodoin Temple Buddhist Bell, one of the finest in appearance and sound in Japan, and a National Treasure.

The Kasuga Lantern Shrine in Nara, Japan, the oldest capital located near Kyoto.

Kyoto: Saturday, July 31st:

Mostly free day to explore in Kyoto. Went to Honnoji Kaikan and saw night fishing in the Uji river.


Ukai - Traditional Cormorant Fishing in Japan is a traditional method of river fishing that has been practiced in Japan for some 1300 years. This method involves fishermen using cormorant birds on leashes to catch sweetfish (such as the Ayu).

Kyoto - Shizuoka - Jamboree : Sunday, August 1st:

Rode the "Bullet" train again to Shizouka. Then we took a bus for another 2 hour ride to Asagiri and the Jamboree site.
