Photos Of Tokyo Olympic Village
July 26th & 27th, 1971

During our stay in Tokyo, we were housed in the former Olympic Village, which was used for the 1964 Summer Olympics

The Olympic village was a redeveloped US Army billeting area, originally called "Washington Heights". The village is located on the north side of Yoyogi Park in downtown Tokyo. Although the Japanese had performed extensive renovations to the area in the early 1960's, prior to the Olympics, the Olympic Village retained the look and feel of a military compound, as prior to World War II it was a military miliary facility for the Japanese Imperial Army.

After the Olympics, Yoyogi Park was opened in 1967. During the Tokyo Olympic Games it was used as the site of the then Olympic Village and now plays host to a park, a soccer ground, a cycling course and an open-air theater. It is divided into a forest area and open area with athletics ground and an outdoor stage. The trees which were planted at the time of opening park have now beautifully grown and constitute a verdant forest with the neighboring Meiji Shrine.

This is the path that eventually leads to Building A. It's hard to believe that this complex, with its wide expansive public spaces and greenery, is located in the heart of Tokyo.

Central Building of the Olympic Village is too large to catch in one shot. The main door to the lobby is in the lower right corner of the photo.

The Friends Coffee Shop offers delicious caramel lattes and snacks, fresh Danishes, and prosciutto sandwiches.

Restaurants in Japan traditionally have displays of plastic food. This particular display is just outside of the Olympic Village
