A SURVEY OF TORNADO DAMAGE IN ELK AND FOREST COUNTIES WAS CONDUCTED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE YESTERDAY. AT APPROXIMATELY 355 PM ON SUNDAY AUGUST 19 2001...A TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 1 MILE SOUTHWEST OF DUHRING IN FOREST COUNTY. AROUND 405 PM THE TORNADO CROSSED THE FOREST COUNTY LINE INTO ELK COUNTY. THE TORNADO LEFT A SPORADIC DAMAGE PATH ABOUT 10 MILES IN LENGTH WHICH EXTENDED FROM NEAR DUHRING IN FOREST COUNTY TO JUST NORTH OF THE TOWN OF NANSEN IN ELK COUNTY. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN SEVERAL TIMES ALONG THE PATH. IN ELK COUNTY...THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN NEAR HIGHLAND AND NANSEN. IN THESE AREAS NEARLY 25 TREES WERE KNOCKED DOWN AND SEVERAL TREE TOPS WERE ALSO SNAPPED OFF. ADDITIONALLY...NICKEL SIZE HAIL OCCURRED IN THIS AREA. THE PATH WAS AROUND 100 YARDS WIDE IN ELK COUNTY. AT APPROXIMATELY 355 PM ON SUNDAY 19 AUGUST 2001...A TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 1 MILE SOUTHWEST OF DUHRING IN FOREST COUNTY...PENNSYLVANIA. THE TORNADO CONTINUED NORTHEAST AND CROSSED INTO ELK COUNTY. THE STORM LEFT A SPORADIC DAMAGE PATH ABOUT 10 MILES IN LENGTH WHICH EXTENDED FROM ABOUT 1 MILE SOUTHEAST OF DUHRING TO JUST NORTH OF THE TOWN OF NANSEN IN ELK COUNTY. THE PATH WIDTH REACHED A MAXIMUM NEAR DUHRING AND IT WAS ESTIMATED TO BE NEARLY 300 YARDS. THE WORST DAMAGE ALSO OCCURRED NEAR THE TOWN OF DUHRING WHERE THE WINDS WERE ESTIMATED TO HAVE REACHED 90 MPH. THIS PUTS THE TORNADO AT AN F1 ON THE FUJITA SCALE. AN ESTIMATED 250 TREES WERE TOPPLED NEAR DUHRING. SEVERAL OF THE TREES FELL ON CABINS...HOUSES...AND VEHICLES. HAIL THE SIZE OF NICKLES COVERED THE GROUND WITH SOME HAIL STONES AS LARGE AS GOLFBALLS. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED WITH THIS TORNADO. SO FAR THIS SPRING AND SUMMER SEASON...THE DUHRING TORNADO HAS BEEN THE STRONGEST CONFIRMED TORNADO (F1) TO AFFECT THE COUNTY WARNING AREA OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PITTSBURGH.
