Manny Legacé was drafted 188th overall in the 1993 Entry Draft by the Hartford Whalers. After five years in the Hartford/Carolina system, Manny was traded on July 31, 1998 to the Los Angeles Kings for a conditional draft pick. That season, Manny made his NHL debut and turned aside 49 shots in a tie. By season's end, Manny had posted a 2.60 goals-against average in 17 games. On July 16, 1999, Manny signed as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings. That year, he played four games (and earned four wins) for the Red Wings. In 2000-01, Manny share goaltending duties with Chris Osgood as the team won the Central Division title. Manny posted a 24-5-5 record with a 2.05 GAA and two shutouts. On October 12, Manny earned his first career shutout in a 4-0 win over the Blackhawks. On November 24, 2000, Manny stopped 34 shots and was the second star of the game in Scotty Bowman's 2000th game behind the bench (a 3-2 victory against the Canucks).
