Roberto Luongo was drafted fourth overall in the 1997 Entry Draft by the New York Islanders, the highest position ever drafted for a goaltender at the time. Two seasons later, he made his NHL debut on November 28, 1999 against the Bruins with a win. One month later, he recorded his first shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Bruins on December 27. By season's end, Roberto had won seven games and posted a 3.25 goals-against average. On June 24, 2000, Roberto was traded to the Florida Panthers with Olli Jokinen for wingers Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish. That season, Roberto went 12-24-7, but posted a 2.44 GAA, a 92.0 save percentage and five shutouts.
