Damian Rhodes was drafted 112th overall in the 1987 Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. On March 22, 1991, he made his NHL debut and earned the victory against the Red Wings. After another two years in the minors, Damian joined the Maple Leafs full time in 1993-94 and went 9-7-3 in 22 games as Félix Potvin's goaltending partner. In the playoffs, he helped the team reached the Western Conference finals before losing to the Canucks. In the shortened 1994-95 season, Damian went 6-6-1 in 13 games. In 1995-96, Damian was traded on January 23 to the Ottawa Senators as part of a three-team deal that included the Islanders. He played 46 games that season between the two teams and went 14-27-5.
In 1996-97, Damian went 14-20-14 in 50 games and helped the Senators improve 36 points to make the playoffs for the first time in team history.He shared goaltending duties that year with Ron Tugnutt. In 1997-98, he went 19-19-7 in 50 games and posted five shutouts. In the playoffs, he helped the team reach the second round. In 1998-99, he went 22-13-7 in 45 games and led the team to the Northeast Division title. On January 2, he scored a goal.
On June 18, 1999, Damian was traded to the expansion Atlanta Thrashers for future considerations. In 1999-2000, Damian played 28 games for the Thrashers and posted a 3.88 goals-against average. On October 14, he posted the first shutout in club history. In 2000-01, Damian played 38 games and posted a 3.36 GAA.
