Steve Shields was drafted 101st overall in the 1991 Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. On December 23, he made his NHL debut against the Senators. The following season, Steve played 13 games for the Sharks behind Dominik Hašek and posted a 2.97 goals-against average. The team improved 19 points in the standing that year to win the Northeast Division title. In 1997-98, Steve played 16 games behind Hašek and posted a 2.83 GAA. On June 18, 1998, Steve was traded with a fourth-round draft pick to the San Jose Sharks for Kay Whitmore and a pair of draft picks (second and fifth rounds). In his first season with his new team, Steve went 15-11-8 and posted a 2.22 GAA and four shutouts. He co-won the Sharks' Player of the Year award with goaltending partner Mike Vernon. In 1999-2000, he played 67 games for the Sharks and posted a 27-30-8 record with a 2.56 GAA and four shutouts. In the playoffs, he helped the Sharks reach the second round.
In 2000-01, Steve was traded on March 5 with Jeff Friesen and a conditional draft pick to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for Teemu Selänne. He played 21 games with the Sharks that season and posted a 2.48 GAA and a 91.1 save percentage.
