Peter Skudra signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Penguins on September 24, 1997. That season, he played his first 17 games at the NHL level and went 6-4-3 with a 1.83 goals-against average. That year, the Penguins won the Northeast Division title. In 1998-99, Peter played 37 games for the Penguins and went 15-11-5 with three shutouts. In 1999-2000, he played 20 games and went 5-7-3. On October 3, 2000, Peter signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins. On October 6, he was claimed on waivers by the Buffalo Sabres. After playing one game with the Sabres, Peter was then re-claimed on waivers by the Boston Bruins on November 14. He played 25 games for the Bruins and posted a 3.33 GAA.
