Jocelyn Thibault was drafted 10th overall in the 1993 Entry Draft by the Québec Nordiques. That year, he made his NHL debut on October 9 against the Bruins. The following night, he earned his first win in a 7-4 victory over the Penguins. Jocelyn played 29 games that season, sharing the goaltending duties with Stéphane Fiset. In the shortened 1994-95 campaign, Jocelyn went 12-2-2 in 18 games as the Nordiques won the Northeast Division title. In 1995-96, Jocelyn moved with the club to Colorado (now the Avalanche) and went 3-4-2 in his first ten games of the season. On December 6, 1995, Jocelyn was traded with Andrei Kovalenko and Martin Rucinský to the Montréal Canadiens for Patrick Roy and Mike Keane. He played 40 games with the Canadiens and went 23-13-3 with a 2.83 goals-against average. He also posted three shutouts. On March 11, he won the final game played at the Montréal Forum. In 1996-97, he went 22-24-11 in 61 games with a 2.90 GAA. In 1997-98, Jocelyn went 19-15-8 in 47 games and posted a 2.47 GAA.
In 1998-99, Jocelyn was traded on November 16 with Dave Manson and Brad Brown to the Chicago Blackhawks for Jeff Hackett, Eric Weinrich, Alain Nasreddine and a fourth-round draft pick. In 62 games between the two teams, Jocelyn posted a 24-30-7 record with five shutouts. On February 13, he won the last game played at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. In 1999-2000, he played 60 games for the Blackhawks and went 25-26-7 with a 2.76 GAA and three shutouts. In 2000-01, he was 27-32-7 with a 2.81 GAA and a career-high six shutouts.
