SEPTA FARE RESTRUCTURING
This is a listing - in layman's terms - of the major fare changes SEPTA approved in 2001. There were public hearings were held in each of the 5 counties where SEPTA operates:
- Monday, 7 May: Bucks County Courthouse, Main & Court Sts, Doylestown Borough
- Tuesday, 8 May: Delaware County Government Center, County Council Meeting Room, 1st Floor, 201 W Front St, Media Borough
- Wednesday, 9 May: Montgomery County Human Services Center (formerly Sacred Heart Hospital), Community Room, Main Floor, 1430 DeKalb Pk, Norristown Borough
- Friday, 11 May: West Chester Municipal Building, Room 240, 401 E Gay St, West Chester Borough
- Wednesday, 16 May: Pennsylvania Convention Center, Grand Hall, Mezzanine Level, 1101 Arch St, Philadelphia
The fares for one-way cash fares, tokens, 10-trip Regional Rail tickets, and DayPasses would take effect Sunday, July 1, 2001 at 12:01am. The rates for weekly passes took effect on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 for the week starting Monday, July 2, 2001. The monthly pass costs took effect starting with the August pass sales on Friday, July 20, 2001.
TRANSIT DIVISION
- $ - The base fare will increase from $1.60 to $2.00. The original proposal stated at the public hearings would have increased fares to $1.90, however SEPTA introduced it's so-called "Alternative 2" following the failure of the Pennsylvania legislature to increase state funding for transit systems across the Commonwealth. The $2.00 figure was never mentioned at any point during the public hearing; in fact, the first mention of this to many members of the public was at the Special Board meeting held on June 21.
- $ - The suburban zone charge will increase from 40 cents to 50 cents; disabled passengers will now pay 25 cents per zone instead of 20 cents per zone.
- $ - The price of a transfer will increase from 40 cents to 60 cents; disabled passengers will now pay 30 cents for a transfer during off peak hours instead of 20 cents. The Hearing Examiner's report recommended the transfer fee be set at 50 cents, however SEPTA rejected that reccomendation.
- $ - The price of a 1 Day Pass will increase from $5.00 to $5.50; however, the Day Pass would now be valid on Suburban bus and rail services in addition to City services; the one-way ride on Regional Rail is still available.
- $ - The cost of tokens will increase from $1.15 to $1.30; the minimum number of tokens to be purchased will remain at 2.
- $ - The cost of a Weekly TransPass will increase from $17.25 to $18.75.
- $ - The cost of a Monthly TransPass will increase from $64.00 to $70.00.
- $ - The cost of a Cross County (Suburban) pass will increase from $75.00 to $85.00, however the Cross County Pass will have "anywhere" privileges on weekends and holidays, much like a TransPass.
ZONE LIBERALIZATIONS:
Several modifications will be made to the zone structure on several city and suburban routes. The zone changes will take effect with the September (City/Red Arrow) or October (Frontier) schedule changes. Many suburban zones would be reduced or consolidated as follows:
- Route G would now be a one zone ride to all points, including Lankenau Hospital in Lower Merion.
- Route 22 would now be a two zone ride between Olney and Warminster Twp. The two suburban zones in Montgomery and Bucks Counties would be consolidated into one zone, with the fare zone boundary at the Philadelphia/Montgomery County line. An overlap zone is created between the Philadelphia/Montgomery County line and Glenside Av/Easton Rd (Glenside Rail Station) in Cheltenham Twp. Route 22 would be a one zone ride for travel between Cheltenham Twp and Warminster, as well as a one zone ride between Olney Terminal and Glenside Rail Station.
- Route 55 would now be a three zone ride between Olney and Cross Keys Plaza in Plumstead Twp. Route 55 would now become a one zone ride between Olney Terminal and Jenkintown.
