Season XVI: Sweet Sixteen!

Announcements

Record chasing Season XVI
Hitting:
Tomwistar’s star SS Johnny Pesky needs just 11 AB in the final three games to set a new AB single-season record that another SS, Honus Wagner, recorded in season 14.
Tomwistar’s star 1b George Sisler has already broken the SBDL record for hits in a season with an impressive 277, besting the 273 that Hank Aaron accumulated two seasons ago.
Sisler, with 59 doubles, needs just one to tie for fifth in SBDL history. If he racks up two twin-baggers in the season’s final series, then Sisler will take 5th all to himself.
Mr. BBW’s slugger Roger Maris has gotten his third 80-HR season in SBDL, and is 1 HR from tying for 4th, 2 HR from tying for 3rd, and 3 HR from tying for 2nd. Does he have a 5-HR series in him to tie the record (86) he set in season 8?
Maris and tomwistar’s CF Hack Wilson are fighting not just for the RBI title, but for positioning in the record book. At 193 and 192 respectively, Maris is tied for 5th and Wilson is tied for 7th. How many runs can they drive in during this final series? Is Hank Greenberg’s 202-RBI performance of four seasons ago in jeopardy?
Bunze0’s rookie OF Bobby Bonds has already shattered an SBDL record, unfortunately it’s a dubious one with 193 strikeouts. The old record was set in the SBDL’s inaugural season by Willie Stargell with 176 whiffs, but that is just a speck of dust in Bonds’ rear view mirror.
SBDL rookie manager BobBoone is eyeing the playoffs, but one of baseball’s best sets of eyes is staring at the SBDL batting average and OBP records. LF Ted Williams is hitting .420, which is 3 points higher than Ty Cobb’s .417 hit for Palanion in season 11. If it wasn’t for Teddy Ballgame, we’d be talking about John McGraw in the OBP category. The current SBDL record is .513, set by Ruth in season 14 and McGraw’s OBP stands right now at .521. However, Williams’ OBP is 18 points higher than McGraw’s (.539)!!

And then there’s…
Babe Ruth – The defending SBDL MVP, who has won the award four straight seasons and six times overall, has multiple opportunities to get into the SBDL Record Book again, though none of his season 16 achievements will set the standard. The stud OF for Bunze0 need 6 runs to get into the top five, however emart’s Mickey Mantle could do the same. The Babe has never hit more than 19 triples in a season until this year. If he were to manage two more, for 25 total, he would make the top 5. Ruth’s slg pct is at .800 with three games left. Will he have his third .800+ season (all in the last 3 seasons)? All three are top-5 in SBDL history; Ralph Kiner is the only other player ever to achieve .800 in SBDL with .811 for TimOrz in season 13. Lastly, the Sultan of Swat has an OPS of 1.270 this season, which will place him in the top 5 there too.

Pitching:
Fifty-four pitchers have garnered 20-win campaigns during the previous 15 season of SBDL, which is an average of 3.6 pitchers per season. There’s a good chance of having 5 20-game winners this season, but none of them will crack the top 5 all-time. Modmark’s Steve Barber (?!) leads the league this year with 21. Jim Bagby Sr. (dacelo) and Claude Passeay (tomwistar) have 20, while Bob Feller (JoeOC) and Dizzy Dean (BobBoone) are at 19.
JoeOC’s workhorse ace Bob Feller, the SBDL defending Cy Young winner, needs to hurl 4 2/3 innings in his final start to make the top 5 in IP. In fact, with 8 IP he would finish at #2, behind the 331.1 innings Three Finger Brown pitched in season 5 for Munich_Man. Only eight pitchers in SBDL history has struck out 300 batters in a season before this season, and five of those came from Sandy Koufax. For the second season in a row, Koufax (BobBoone) and Feller have each hit the 300 K mark. If Feller maintains his season’s pace, he should strike out 8 in his final start, which would give him 324 for the season, which would be 3rd best all-time. If his whiffs hit double-digits, he would have the 2nd most. Koufax’s record is 336.
Will Honeyman’s relief ace Dennis Eckersley finish the season with the 5th best WHIP (for RP) in SBDL history? The Eck is at 1.00 with three games to go, and the 5th best WHIP in the annals is Woodie Fryman’s 1.00 set in season 8 for JoeOC. If Eck were to pitch 3 or 4 innings with no hits or walks in this final series, he could have the 4th or even the 3rd best WHIP record.

Then there are some dubious pitching honors…
13Baseball’s George Suggs has already demolished the record for hits allowed in a single-season. Suggs, with 392 hits, has allowed 38 more than the previous record holder, the elder Bagby in season 14. In fact, Bagby is really beginning to feel better about himself as tomwistar’s Claude Passeau has ALSO bested that old record, sitting at 359. Of course, Bagby himself has a shot of allowing more than his old mark of 354 since he’s allowed 351 with one start to go.
Suggs’ dubious legacy is not done there, however. With 187 ER, he’s one away from tying (two from setting) the record Jim Bagby Sr. also currently holds. Tomwistar’s John Montefusco is also in the running with 186 and one start left. And tomwistar’s Johnny Rigney also has a decent shot of making the top 5 with a(nother) bad start.
While Modmark’s Barber may be leading the league in wins, Barber is also leading the league in walks and could set the record. Barber is at 171, which is #2 right now, just 2 behind the mark Ray Sadecki set last season. N Texas Widwmakers’ Bob Harmon also has a shot at the title, sitting at 168 with one start remaining. All told, four of the five most walks allowed are from this season (Nolan Ryan and Allie Reynolds).

Down to the wire!
With 9 games left, Tomwistar's magic number for clinching the East division is 1. SBDL rookie BobBoone's magic number for clinching the West is 4.
The Central division is still way up in the air with dacelo holding a 2-game edge on 13baseballs and a 3-game margin on SBDL rookie emart. Dacelo's Jukes host emart's Fringe tonight in the first of two series together down the stretch. In the meantime, 13baseballs' Furball gets 6 of its last 9 against Mr. Baseball World, who is staring at the #1 draft pick position.
As for the Wild Card playoff spot, this is a fierce battle down the stretch. 13baseballs and high school buddy Modmark are tied for the spot right now with emart 1 game back, Palanion 2 games back, and SBDL rookie N Texas Widowmakers 3 games back. They've all Modmark, N Texas, and Palanion have been streaking: Mark is 7-3 in his last 10, N Texas has won 7 straight and 22 of last 32, Palanion is 8-4 in last 12 and 22-8 in last 30. But will either of them make the playoffs?
As for home field advantage, tomwistar's recent surge has gotten him a one game lead on BobBoone for that coveted spot, while dacelo is just 4 games back. Both tomwistar and BobBoone have a chance at 90-win seasons, too.
This should be a great final 9 games.

Retirement!!!
I will put the spreadsheet and the link to the thread(main ATG forum - need 4 randomizers) on the Web site as soon as I have a chance.
The teams that are retiring at the end of season XVI (16) are:
PIT - post
DET - post
PIT- pre

The three new teams joining the pool:
CHC-exp
MON-exp
TOR-exp

This could mean goodbye to:
Norm Cash, the Waners, Kaline, Colavito, Wright, Face, Maz, Clemente, Kiner, Grimes, French, Traynor, Veale, Vaughan, Gooch, and more, if they are not on rosters at season's end and not protected...
This could also mean hello to:
Raines, Sandberg, Dawson, Jenkins, G. Carter, Alomar, Sutter, Santo, Madlock, Sosa, Reardon, Valentine, T. Fernandez, Key, and more.
Looks like it will be an interesting end to this season and a compelling offseason, too.

I have created an SBDL Draft Thread (picks only) to continue and maintain the 6-round draft.
Many factors have led to this decision. Among them were:
1. I had missed an entire page of posts (when Ethan was sick) that included ballpark change announcements, due in part because each draft pick post is a mile long.
2. Each draft pick post is a mile long.
3. Where the clock is concerned in the draft, if we chat too much it may take a little effort to find the appropriate post, etc.

I would prefer the SBDL Discussion thread to continue to be chat, league talk, social, league announcements, etc. NO DRAFT PICKS. And no chat in the draft thread, for that matter. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Again, here is the draft thread link: http://forums.sportingnews.com/viewtopic.php?t=571217&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=>

News

SBDL welcomes BobBoone, emart, and N. Texas Widowmakers as the newest managers!!

JOE OC wins first SBDL title!

Finals Game 7 goes into annals of SBDL history as a tight 12-inning classic - almost something from a storybook. Splittorff and Gibson locked in a pitchers' duel last night, allowing just one run apiece, both men wanting to be the hero. But it was the "Say Hey Kid" who ended the suspenseful final chapter with a climactic walk-off home run.
The bullpens each allowed a run in the ninth; first the Cremes coming within three outs of walking into the sunset as champs. Then the Ghosts clawed back to tie in the bottom half of the 9th.
But it was Willie Mays who wrote the historical climax with a bomb to open the bottom of the 12th, giving the Ghosts their first SBDL championship.
"I was waiting on a breaking ball," said Mays after the game. "That late in a game, that late in the series, I figured there was no chance they were gonna try to throw heat."
"It was a thrill. Unfortunately for us," said Cremes' starter Splittorff, "we came up short in the end. I think we all did everything we could. We left everything on the field in this series."
The game had it all. The hero: Mays. The goat: Christenson. The suspense: 12 innings. The plot twist: Cremes short lead in the 9th inning. The strange: both Cremes' runs were unearned due to Gus Triandos passed balls.
And for one team, a happy ending.

Congratulations to both finalists: JOEOC and Bunze0. What a great series and season.
