"BENT BUT NOT BROKEN This flagpole is both a symbol of the persistent spirit of the personnel of Detachment 1 and a reminder of Typhoon Cora, the worst Typhoon in the history of the Ryukuyan Weather Bureau. When personnel emerged cautiously from their battered quarters after 30 hours of winds with gusts to 200 knots on the morning of 6 Sep 1966, one of their first acts was to raise the flag where it streamed proudly in winds still gusting to 50 knots. Just as the flagpole was bent, but not broken by the fury of nature, so were the spirits and determination of the officers and airmen of Det. 1."
