The name Idzinga Brugt Idses Idzinga, the grandson of Hendrik from Schoterland, was the first who used the name Idzinga. Before 1811 the family did not use a distinct family name. In 1811 everybody in the Netherlands was obliged to assume a name. However, no certificate was found in the achieves, which reported that Brugt Idses took this name. In the province of Friesland, most of these certificates can be found. Just as their ancestors and family members in Amsterdam, the Idzinga family doesn`t belong to the richest in Friesland. That can be the reason that the grandson of Brugt Idses Idzinga, Hendrik Brugts Idsinga, moved to Utah (USA) in 1901. The descendants of Hendrik Brugts Idzinga
On his death certificate in 1814 Brugt Idses is called Brugt Idses Idzinga. Actually Idses and Idzinga mean the same, i.e. son of Ids or descendant of Ids. The two sons of Brugt Idses Idzinga will later use different family names. Lieuwe Brugs starts using the name De Vries in 1800 when he lives in Amsterdam. This name means, From Friesland or The Frisian. From him the big De Vries family descents. The second son of Brugt Idses, Hendrik Brugts stays with his father in Oudeschoot and used the same name as on his fathers death certificate. He is the ancestor of the Idzinga, Idsinga, Idzenga and Edsinga families in Friesland and the United States. Due to many spelling errors in the civil records, different varieties of this family name appeared in the 19th century.

In 1901 part of the Idsinga family moves to Ogden in the USA. Ogden is a town in Utah close to Salt Lake City. They were all converted to the Church of the Later Day Saints, or Mormon Church The familiy was never very rich and they may also have hoped for a
a better live in the New World like so many others. In 1901 a big group of Dutch and Frisian moved to Ogden. Many of them were related which eachother. The Idsinga family also moved with friends. Hendrik Brugt Idsinga and his second wife Iebeltje de Haan took their childern (the oldest son of Hendrik remained in Friesland) and
those from her first marriage: Together with this family the group of immigrants is also joined by: The sister of Iebeltje, and her husband Kerst Jans Meibos and Hendriks cousin Trijntje Idzinga en Johannes Wagenmakers. Many people from Friesland settled in Ogden.The Hendriks oldest son Markus stayed in Friesland, as Hendriks brother Klaas Brugts Idzenga.
