INTERNATIONAL PEACE PARK

HIROSHIMA, JAPAN

The shell of the building you see in the background of this picture was one of the few structures left standing after the United States dropped the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan at 8:15 AM on August 6, 1945. The bomb instantly destroyed almost everything within 1.5 miles of detonation and eventually killed more than 140,000 people. Today, the detonation point has been turned into an International Peace Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city of Hiroshima has dedicated itself to working for peace and the end of nuclear weapons. Hiroshima is also one of the most pleasant cities in Japan which proves that a city can bounce back from even the worst disasters.
