If there is one city that should not be missed on a visit to Japan, it's Kyoto. Despite being a very modern city, Kyoto has managed to retain some its past as the cultural and religious center of Japan. In the hills surrounding Kyoto, you can find more than 2000 temples and shrines as well as dozens of gardens and museums. This particular temple dates back to 798 AD, though it was most recently rebuilt in 1633.  Located at the top of a hill overlooking Kyoto, the views of the city are spectacular at sunset.
