Competitons and Tournaments

The club coat of arms, presented by the President to all members in recognition of their efforts and dedication.

The folowing links will take you to some photo albums of UUC fencers at various competitons over the past few Years. Under the direction of El Presidente Chris the philosophy of the club has by no means been:

"Win at all costs - and if you fail, throw yourself on your sword at once!"

Rather it has been one of:

"Enjoy yourself at all costs - and if you fail, Well! It only means more time at the bar."

UUC did fairly well over the past two years. In both the 97/98 Season and the 98/99 season the Club were victorious against Queens University Belfast in the annual Friendly Tournament. UUC took gold over all in 97/98 and gold in foil and sabre in 98/99.

On the Intervarsity circuit the UUC team did a sterling job in hosting the 98 Irish Varsity Fencing Tournament. The dedication of members and the forward thinking of the President led to the competiton being a runaway success. Compliments were paid to the club as host by visiting salles and varsity teams with the overall consensus being that it was perhaps the most sucessful Varsity Fencing Tournemant of the past 10 years.

The 99 Varsity Tournament, held in UCD was also an extremely enoyable experience. UUC fielded its usual mixture of 'old hands' and firery novices. Fencers found themselves facing off against superior opposition, but they did the club and more importantly themselves proud by rising to challenge in all three weapons. Particualr mention should be given to the Ladies team, with Karen and Anne representing the University in both Foil and Epee.

Furthermore UUC accepted an invitation from the officers of QUB Fencing club to field members in the 98 Friendly Tournament at Carrickfergus Castle. The pleasant weather matched the mood of the day and facilitated outdoor Epee bouts, whilst the Sabre competition was held in the great hall of the Castle. UUC's President Chris did well to beat off stiff oppositon in the preliminary rounds and to take a trophy in Sabre, likewise UUC's Adrian also made it through the last rounds of D.E.
Have a look for yourself, hopefully you will be inspired - remember:

'The world continues to offer glittering prizes to those with stout hearts and sharp swords'
