Early Sockets and Fixtures

Before the turn of the century and for a short time after, many light bulbs had different style bases besides the standard Edison base we see today. Here you will see several different socket types, as well as some fixtures, and related material from this time perioed.

1879 Edison Socket">

This is the first type of lamp socket used in 1879 for the ediosn lamp, amde of wood and brass, these were turned in the machine shop in Menlo Park, as the lamp factory didnt open untill late 1880. This is an original from one of the earliest Edison Lamp System Instalations.

1890 Edison G.E. Socket

This 1890 edison socket was made by the Ediosn General Electric Co. and pre dates the Edison Thompson Houston merge that formed General Electric.

Turn of The Century Edison base socket

This Socket was made durin the turn of the century, and accepts an edison base lamp. The socket was manyfactured by Paste Electric. The mica insulation inside of the socket dates it to about 1900.

Thompson Houston Socket and Shade

This Thompson Houston and shade combo dates to the turn of the century, and the hairpin lamp in the socket dates to the late 1890's

Turn Of The Century Swivel Lamp

This Swivel lamp dates to the turn of the century and is pictured here with a Manhatton ruby Carbon Lamp of 1900
