Days Like These
EBCD04 1991

The mood darkens for this, Aiken Drum's 3rd studio album, which opens with heavy, thunderous rain and stays under that cloud for most of 'side one'. The acoustic number Dreaming sees the first appearance of a certain Mr Colin Rainsforth on backing vocals, and then you're into the 'second side' which is mainly built up of lighter, airier tracks, but Afraid To Sleep and A City bring us right back down to Earth.
John and Bez left the band, finding themselves being replaced by Simon's sequencers, and Claire ended her brief stay with Aiken Drum claiming musical differences. There's nowhere near as much 'joie-de-vivre' as AD90, but this a mesmerising journey nonetheless.

Aiken Drum on this album are:
James A Bostock
Claire Gibbs
& Simon Peacock

With special thanks to:
Colin Rainsforth on track 7

Equipment used to make this album:
Yamaha MT100ii 4-track cassette recorder and a
dodgy 8-track open reel of indeterminate origin, along with an equally obscure 12-channel mixer (tracks 2,4,9,11,13 1nd 14)
Yamaha RX21 drum machine and PSS-170 keyboard,
Roland MT-32 Sound Module,
various cheap and unreliable acoustic and electric guitars,
two Shure Prologue mics
and a pink tambourine.
