SCIENCE IN THE SCHOOL

The standard of entries in the first year science project competition was so high that certificates of commendation were awarded to all that entered and choosing winners was very difficult. Encyclopedias were awarded to the following students and presented by Mr. Gildea in an awards ceremony at the beginning of February.

MS. DEANE'S CLASS: Mark George and Karl O'Callaghan for their project on "Reptiles".

MS. COUSIN'S CLASS: Stephanie Carol and Jacqueline Fitzpatrick for their project on "Cats".

MR. SMITH'S CLASS: Suzanne McLoughlin and Michelle Byrne for their project on "The Body".

MR. MURPHY'S CLASS: Edel Murray and Caroline Cooper for their project on "The Body". Lynn Behan won a special prize for excellent presentation and Gavin Atkinson won a special prize for his model. -MS. P. DEANE

REPTILES We decided to do our project on reptiles because we think reptiles because we think reptiles are very interesting. We got the information from the library, encyclopedias and the zoo. Then we decided to make a model. We did this by collecting rocks, a box and little animals. From our project we learned that some snakes are poisonous. Some frogs are poisonous and the difference between crocodiles and alligators. KARL O'CALLAGHAN AND MARK GEORGE

THE HUMAN BODY We decided to do our project on the Human Body because we found it interesting to study how the body works and we learning about this subject in school so it wasn't to difficult to come up with information.

We got our information from the school library, encyclopedias and notes we had from science class. From our project we learned about body organs such as the heart and how they work. We also learned how our breathing works and the dangers of smoking. Apart from our educational experience we also learned how to write and illustrate a project properly on paper.

The prizes were presented by Mr. Gildea at a first year assembly. We honored to receive the prize of a Kingfisher encyclopedia each. We learned a lot from these books and hopefully they will help us with our next project. -MICHELLE BYRNE AND SUZANNE McLOUGHLIN
