Hotaru made her first appearance in SMS. She first met Chibi-usa chasing down her run-away hat, and the two became friends. But conflicts arose later in the series when it was discovered that Hotaru was also Sailor Saturn, the Senshi of Death and Destruction, born to bring forth the end of the world. Sailors Nepune, Uranus and Pluto tried to destroy Hotaru on several occasions, but Chibi-usa and the inners always stopped them. When the Death Busters got a hold of Chibi-usa's pure heart, the Outers were sure that Saturn would awaken and cause the dreaded "Silence". But when Hotaru swallowed the pure heart, she awakened as Mistress 9, not as Sailor Saturn. In one of the last episodes of SMS, Hotaru finally did awaken inside of Mistress 9 as Sailor Saturn. Sailor Saturn vowed to stop the Silence by ending the world because Sailormoon was too weak to do it without two levels of transformation. But Sailor Moon saved the world at the last minute by using the other senshi's strength and steping into the battle between Saturn and Pharoh 90 and saving Hotaru. In the anime, the outer senshi did not appear at all in SMSuperS. (In the manga, the outers made an appearance at the end of SMSuperS to help the inners defeat The Amazoness Quartet, Zirconia and Nephrenia.) In the anime, the Outers did come back in time for SMStars when they helped finish off Nephrenia (those few episodes were designed to bring the outers back into the plot line) and were seen throughout the rest of the season. Later when the outers go up against Galaxia, Saturn tries to destroy her by bringing forth the end of the world (again). But Galaxia stops Saturn by telling her that she was the reason she even sent Nephrenia in the first place (to awaken the powers within baby Hotaru). Galaxia attacked the outers while Saturn was still in shock over being the cause of Nephrenia. After the attack, Neptune and Uranus realize that they won’t be able to defeat Galaxia head on. They come up with an ingenious plan to finish the Golden Senshi. By pretending to turn against the other senshi, Neptune and Uranus accept Galaxia's golden bracelets and give up their starseeds to become Sailor Anima-mates. In order for their plan to work, the other senshi had to truly believe that Neptune and Uranus were traitors, so under the command of Galaxia, Amima-mates Neptune and Uranus took the starseeds of Pluto and Saturn, killing them.
