Here is a picture of the walled garden in early spring 1999. When I first started on this garden in late winter 1999 all the sharply shaped boarders around the lawn we turfed over. The first job I did was to mark out a pill shaped lawn, then remove the turf from the areas which were to become the continuous boarders. This turf was not wasted I made a turf pile out of it in an out of the way place then covered it with old carpet and left it to rot down so I can put it back in to the garden next year.
The soil in this continuous boarder was enriched with some manure and blood, fish and bone powder. Three stepping stones were laid across the earth to give access to the lawn. I had only a couple of plants to put in the garden most of which were from my mothers last house. One plant I was most pleased about was a self laid cotonester which I found growing on the bank above the garden, I felt this plant was intend to grow in a sharply shaped corner of the continuous boarder, it looked very at home spilling on to the surrounding stone.
I felt that even though this garden was not of any great size it would be a shame for it to be with out a pond. I added a pond buy sinking a plastic dust bin in to the ground, I wanted this pool to be around 60cm (2') deep. Unfortunately I hit bed rock before I got to this depth, After much contemplation I built a small stone edging around the pond to increase the depth of water it contained. It was planted up with a water Lillie, iris and pond weed brought from my mothers last pond.
