Surely no composer in Hollywood can claim a more intriguing backround than Graeme Reevell. After working in his native Australia as an orderly in a mental institution, he produced an album that set the rantings of the patients to music. Then he traveled around the world recording insect noises for another album project; still later he founded one of the earliest industrial rock band, SPK.

His involvement with SPK led to an invitation from Austrailian directors George Miller and Phillip Noyce to score their suspense thriller DEAD CALM. Revell's music, which employed a cello, soprano voice, African percussion and the sounds of human breathing, was reconized witht he Australian Academy Award for Best Original Score. Since then he has scored the Wim Wenders film UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD as well as THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE, BOXING HELENA, BODY OF EVIDENCE and THE CROW.

ABOUT THE SCORE

I first saw the Kodo drummers in performance in London some years ago and then again in Los Angeles in 1993. These were the two of the most physically exciting and musically fascinating performances I had ever seen. So when I learned I was fortunate enough to be working on an action picture set in New Orleans, with a Belgian star, and a brilliant Chinese director, I immediately knew I had to use Japanese drummers. What could be more natural?

As soon as I saw the rough cut of the film, I had already begun hearing in my head a complex of eerie dixie band music combined with the huge pounding of O-Daiko blended with a 65 piece orchestra.

It proved very dificult to find a day off in Kodo's world touring schedule that coincided with the demands of the movie's schedule. In reality there was only one day available and the session would have to be held in a concert hall half way between Osaka and Kyoto. Unfortunately, the movie was not yet ready to be scored by this date and I came under pressure to drop the idea. But by then I couldn't let go of my vision to produce something entirely out of the ordinary for an action movie score. So I took the chance of writting the music for the Kodo drums to an entirely different cut of the movie that the one I used fir the accompanying orchestra.

The results are an interesting combination of mathematical mind-bending and extremly clever music editing. My heartfelt thanks go to the performers and the many people who helped make all this possible and a great deal of fun for me.
