This is a Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting). Size 16 cm (6 in). It looks almost like the Common Kingfisher except for the dark blue upperparts and ear coverts, darker rufous underparts and all black bill. It is an uncommon resident here in Malaysia at low elevations south to Singapore where it is rare. This bird was seen on a low perch overlooking a forested stream in Batu Gajah, Perak, Malaysia.
