This is a female Common Goldenback
woodpecker (Dinopium javanese). Size 30
cm (12 in.). Male has golden mantle and wings, red lower back and rump,
white face with 2 black malar stripes and mostly black hindneck. Side of
neck and underparts whitish marked with black scales. Crown: male red with
pointed crest; female black with whitish spots/streaks from forehead to tip
of crest. Found in the Indian subcontinent and South-East Asia to the
Greater Sundas, Bali and the Philippines. It is resident at low elevations,
south to Singapore and is the most common woodpecker in wooded gardens. It
is usually seen in pairs.
