The Chinese Pond-Heron (Ardeola
bacchus) is 46 cm (18 in.) When at rest the head, neck and
breast is mostly whitish with bold brown streaks. The back is brownish. In
flight, the exposed wings are white contrasting with the dark head and back.
It is found in Japan, North-East China, south to northern Indo-China,
Myanmar and North-East India; wintering south through South-East Asia and
the Malay Peninsula to Borneo. It is a common winter visitor at low
elevations, south to Singapore favouring mangroves, inland freshwater swamps
and flooded rice fields. It is usually solitary keeping to thick covers.
