This is a male Great Hornbill (Buceros bicornis). Size 122 cm (48 in). It
has pale yellow bill, casque, and neck. Black mask and body with broad white
bar on trailing edge and centre of wing. Tail white with black subterminal
band. The front edge of the casque in the male is black and the iris is red
as opposed to white in the female. Occurs in the Indian subcontinent through
South-East Asia and the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra. Resident from low
elevations up to 1200 m, south to Johore. Also found in Pulau Langkawi and
Pulau Pangkor. Singapore birds are cage escapees. Prefers forest canopy
singly, pairs and sometimes in larger groups feeding in fruiting trees with
other hornbills.
