This is a male Stonechat. It is a small bird 5.5 inches
(14cm), black head, throat and upper breast. Rufous breast and belly.
There is a white patch on the neck as seen. Upperpart dark brownish with
brownish fringes. The adult is supposed to have white rump but it was
not in this case which was fully covered with primaries (Thank you
Glenda). The voice of this bird is like that of two pebbles knocking
each other. The female lacks the black head and upperparts.

This northern winter visitor breeds in Africa, Europe and temperate
Asia. It is found is open country, rice fields. The behaviour of this
bird is like the Long-tailed Shrike and indeed they were seen to share
the same fence when this photo was taken. It is usually solitary and
perches on low fence and poles and pounce on insects on the ground.
