The Long-tailed Parakeet (Psittacula
longicauda). Size 41 cm (16 inch). This
is the male with green crown, reddish sides of head and nape, and broad
malar stripe. Wings blue, mantle tinged bluish, tail blue with yellow tips.
Maxilla red with horn colour tip, mandible brown. It is found in the Andaman
and Nicobars, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. It is resident in
Malaysia at low elevations south to Singapore and mainly found in mangroves,
forests, the forest edge, open country and wooded oil palm plantations. This
particular bird was shot in the durian growing area of Kampong Gajah in
Lower Perak. It usually frequents the canopy and crowns of tall trees in
noisy flocks foraging for food.
