This is the Rufous Woodpecker (Celeus brachyurus). Size 25 cm (10 in.) Bird
has short black bill and rufous plumage marked with blackish bars on
upperparts. The male has red patch below eye which is lacking in the female
so this is a male. It is found in the Indian subcontinent and southern China
through South-East Asia to the Greater Sundas. It is resident in Malaysia
from low elevations up to 900 m, south to Singapore. Its habitats include
forest, the forest edge, plantations and gardens and is often seen in the
canopy and middle storey.

Bird was perched unobtrusively on branch and spotted by my wife Audrey. Pix
shot at Sengat Estate at Simpang Pulai with digital camera and scope
combination.
