BRIEF HISTORY REVIEW

This region has a rich past, where it was founded, the first Civilization, Chavin de Huantar (1,700 A.C.) which will have influence in other regions and later cultures.
The Recuay or Huaylas Cultures, have left very interesting examples of ceramic and statues of rock (Monoliths). Later the Incas, conquest this region at the middle of the XV Century incorporating to its Empire.
In 1533, Hernando Pizarro, passes by Huaraz on his way to Pachacamac.
On July 25th of 1857, Huaraz was founded.

PRINCIPAL PLACES TO SEE

- THE REGIONAL MUSEUM Has a valuable collection of Ceramic and rock statues (monoliths) of the old cultures of the region. Also has a model of the Chavin Temple.
- MIRADOR DE RATAQUENUA Its a hill located at the east part of the city, where you can see al the panorama of Huaraz and mountains down the valley of the Callejon de Huaylas.

SURROUNDINGS TO THE CITY
- WILCAHUAIN - Archeological sight located at 7 kms. north of Huaraz, presenting lithic constructions of 4 platforms one over another that look like a shaped pyramid.
- MONTERREY- Hot springs located north of Huaraz, with private baths and swimming pools.
- COLLAHUASI - A Mirador (look-out tower), where you can have a total view from North to South, of the Cordillera Blanca.

- LLANGANUCO In this magical canyon there are two beautiful lakes called Chinancocha and Orconcocha (3,850 mts. above sea level). These can be reached after an fascinating two hour ride which is full of charming views that nature provides in all her glory throughout the Black and White Mountain range which form the Huaylas Valley with its many historic and picturesque villages.
- CHAVIN DE HUANTAR - Way in the rugged zone of the Conchucos Valley and just a few hours from Huaraz, a date with history awaits you. From the stone labyrinths arose this magical and super natural legends, the cultural currents of our amazing past which inspired the works of art and the monumental structures of colossal architecture which will astonish us after more than 3,000 years since it was made this grandiose testimony of our roots which is the pride of our ancestors.
- PASTO RURI You will visit the Puma Pampa Gasified Water Spring. Passing by the Pumapashimi Lagoon, also known as the Spring of the Seven Colors. On the way you will be amazed by the giant plant of the Puya Raymondi, considered the biggest flower in the world.After arriving to the base area and making a small hike to the snowy part of Pastoruri.

ALTERNATIVES: At the moment there is many hikes of a day tour to lakes in the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra. One of the most popular is Wilkacocha in the Cordillera Negra across Huaraz with a great view of the Cordillera Blanca. Also another very popular tour is the climb to the Mateo Mountain (full day), a day climb to a glacier in the Cordillera Blanca located in the Ulta Valley.
