from SMS to MMS

MMS builds on the staggering success of SMS, moving beyong the latter's ability to send only text. It is estimated that globally, there will be 100 billion SMS messages sent per month by the end 2002 (Logica). It is very likely that MMS will build upon this growing trend and benefit from 2.5G and 3G technology, just as SMS has done with 2G.

market evolution

Nokia believes that MMS will rapidly evolve into a true mass-market technology for both personal and prefessional use. The fact that the business and leisure identities of users are not separated by the service, means that MMS will be capable of meeting the needs of a wide spectrum of users. Phone users will find it easy to adapt to MMS, since it can simply be treated as an advanced form of SMS. As such, MMS technology has brought us one step closer to 3G communication and services.

mobile phone evolution

Although the number of MMS-compatible mobile phones is expected to grow rapidly, mobile phones without this capability will continue to be used. With the help of Nokia MMS solution, users of mobile phones without the MMS capability will receive a notification via SMS, informing them that they have received a multimedia message that can be retrived via the Internet.
