THE PEEBLES AND BAILEY FAMILY HISTORY


1st GENERATION IN AMERICA

David Peebles, born in the late 1500's to early 1600's in Fife Scotland. In 1633,

David married Elspet Mackie. They had the following children:

1. Criston (1634) was baptized in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.

2. William (our ancestor) was born on July 7, 1635.

3. Alison was born and baptized on July 7, 1641, in Balclavie, Fife, Scotland.

4. Margaret was born in Balclavie and baptized in St. Monance on September 18, 1642.

5. John was born and baptized in Balclavie on April 9, 1644.

David's first wife, Elspet Mackie, died and was buried in Carnbee, Fife, Scotland around 1652.

It is believed that Captain David Peebles, who was a Royalist, escaped to Virginia during the Cromwell Rebellion after he and 300-400 other Royalists had been sentenced to the block. He left his wife and children in Scotland. In 1649, he received a grant for 833 acres in Charles City (now Prince George County) Virginia. There, he built his plantation, "Bon Accord". After Elspet's death, he married Elizabeth Bishop and they had the following children:

1. Sarah (about 1656).

2. Christian (about 1659) who married into the Poythress family and later inherited

Bon Accord.

Captain David Peebles was injured as he led his militia in squelching an Indian uprising. He was buried on his beloved 'Bon Accord'.

2nd GENERATION IN AMERICA

William Peebles, born July 7, 1635, came to America to settle his father's estateand manage his affairs. He lived at Bon Accord and acquired additional land grants. He married Judith ?, a ward of John Drayton. Some believe her last name was Hubbard or Dudley since these names were used extensively in her lineage. William and Judith had the following known children (and probably others):

1. David 11 (our ancestor).

3rd GENERATION IN AMERICA

David 11 (born about 1682, died about 1726) married Ann Maybury (or Mayberry) in Prince William County, Virginia. They had the following children:

1. Jehu, Sr. (our ancestor) was born about 1705 and died about 1803.

Other probable children are: David and Joseph.

4th GENERATION IN AMERICA

Jehu Peebles, Sr. married Mary ? and they had the following children:

1. Jehu, Jr. (our ancestor) was born around 1730 in Virginia and died June 25, 1813 in North Carolina.

2. Hubbard

3. Frederick

4. Brittain

5. A daughter who married a Lemuel Lanier.

Jehu, Sr. married a 2nd time to Ann (Rivers ?) There were possibly other children. Jehu, Sr. lived to be almost 100 years old.

5th GENERATION IN AMERICA

Jehu Peebles, Jr. (our ancestor) married ? and they had the following children:

1. Hugh

2. Seth

Jehu Peeples, Jr. then married Catherine Smith, daughter of William & Elizabeth Smith of Greenville Co., Virginia. They had the following children:

1. Jensey

2. Drury (our ancestor).

3. Nathaniel (our ancestor).

4. Catherine who married a Perdue.

5. Sally (1768) who married Phillip Jean.

6. Nancy (1770) who married George McKenny.

7. Wyatt who married a Rhuhamer.

In Jehu Peebles's will, dated 23 April 1813, he left his plantation to Catey (his wife) and his youngest son Wyatt. Seth, who was dying at the time, was left out of the will and a Jessie ? was included. Jessie was not his son but could have been Seth's son.

6th GENERATION IN AMERICA

Drury Peebles (our ancestor) married Lucy Williamson and they had the following children:

1. Frederick

2. Elizabeth (Betsy)

3. Celia was born January 30, 1789.

4. Mary Polly (our ancestor) was born August 4, 1794, and died May 25, 1833.

Mary Polly married her uncle, Nathaniel's son, James on July 16, 1812. ( They were

first cousins and the parents of our Celia who married William R. Bailey).

7th GENERATION IN AMERICA

Nathaniel Peebles (our ancestor) was born January 14, 1771, and died December 16, 1837. He married Elizabeth Foster Peebles (his first cousin and the daughter of Hubbard Peebles). They had the following children:

1. James (our ancestor) married Mary Polly Peebles, his first cousin. She died before James came to Mississippi.

2. Priscilla was born in 1791 an married a Douthitt.

3. Albert

4. Alpha was born October 22, 1794, and married Amanda Hamilton McNairy. They moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi and are buried at Peebles Cemetery which is located in present day Webster County, Mississippi.

5. Seth Newton was born in 1798 and later moved to Lowndes County, Mississippi.

6. Katie Robinson Smith married Robert Foster.

7. Drewry stayed in North Carolina.

8. John Hubbard

9. Abraham Hubbard

10. Hubbard Jehu moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi and is buried at Peebles Cemetery.

11. Elizabeth Foster married W. Tatum.

8th GENERATION IN AMERICA

James Peebles married Mary Polly Peebles (our ancestors) on July 16, 1812. They were the children of brothers: James' father was Nathaniel and Mary Polly's father was Drury. Mary Polly was born August 4, 1779, and died May 25, 1833, in Rowan County, North Carolina. They had the following children:

1. Abraham D. (Born June 12, 1813, and died in 1897. He married Louisa Jean Peebles, his cousin, and the daughter of Albert. They lived in Winona and are buried in Peebles Cemetery.

2. Frederick S. who married in North Carolina, and must have spent some time in Mississippi according to Celia's diary, but may have moved back to North Carolina.

3. Celia L. E. C. (our ancestor) was born May 28, 1821, and died February 1, 1891.

James came to Mississippi and later married a Margaret ?.

9th GENERATION IN AMERICA

William R. Bailey was born September 20, 1810, and died May 15, 1876. William R. Bailey and Celia L. E. C. Peebles were married on December 13, 1838. Both are buried in Peebles Cemetery in what is now Webster County, Mississippi.

William R. Bailey and Celia L.E.C. Peebles (our ancestors) had the following children:

1. Mary Ann (born December 1, 1839) married John B. Vernon.

2. Unnamed infant (born July 10, 1841.

3. John H. R. (our ancestor) born April 22, 1843, married Mary Elizabeth Inge. They are buried at Sarepta Cemetery in Webster County, Mississippi.

4. Caroline E.E.J. was born November 10, 1845, and died October 30, 1846.

5. Abram D. P. was born on Aubust 31 1848, and died of typhoid fever on November 3, 1852.

6. James E. A. bas born February 20, 1852, and married Ida Irving. They are buried at Sarepta Cemetery in Webster County, Mississippi.

7. Elizabeth Ann Amanda was born April 7, 1854, and married Joseph Frederic Herrard. They are buried at Sarepta Cemetery in Webster County, Mississippi.

8. William D. J. (Bill) was born May 22, 1857, and married Angeline Mitchell. They are buried at Sarepta Cemetery in Webster County, Mississippi.

9. Mary V. (Polly) was born July 2, 1859, and married Pete Mitchell. They are buried at Sarepta Cemetery in Webster County, Mississippi.

10. Pleasant S. H. was born September 29, 1862.

John H. R. Bailey married Mary Elizabeth Inge (our ancestors). They had the following children:

1. Florence Adela Bailey was born March 9, 1872, and died March 20, 1912. She married Charlie Myers.

2. James Edward Bailey (our ancestor) married Florence Ainsworth.

3-5 Three other children died as children: Emma Lee, John William and Mary Elizabeth.

James Edward Bailey and Florence Ainsworth had the following children:

1. Marth Ethel Irene was born April 24, 1905, and died June 7, 1998. She married Pleasant Hamer Lott.

2. Luther Edward Bailey (our ancestor) was born June 30, 1907, and married Mary Lou Sheppeard. Her parents were Thomas Wiley Sheppeard and Anna Alice Smith.

3. Infant son

4. John married Epel Murphy.

5. Jettie F. died as infant.

6. Talmadge died as young child.

7. William Lindsey was born 1917 and died in 2000. He married Fannie B. Boatman

Luther Edward Bailey married Mary Lou Sheppeard (our ancestors). They had the following children:

1. James Wiley Bailey was born January 3, 1931, and married Mildred Earline Wood.

2. Benny Wayne Bailey

3. Mary Jane Bailey
