Chapter 14 - Far From the Ruins of the World

They peered into the globe for endless time. The January night was still as the chill hand of winter kept a stronghold over the land. It was late, very late, and those of Rowan Bold slumbered deeply or dozed before a warm fire. The sparkles of the chill night had escaped human notice and only the trees heard the hushed whispers between the elf and the maia.

They watched quietly, Elyen remarking on some things that Haldir did not understand, though for the most part he understood little of what was being shown to them. Yet, judging from Elyen's small smiles, it seemed there was still yet hope that the plans she had set into motion might still be fruitful. This thought gave Haldir some measure of comfort for it meant that they would be one step closer to taking the Straight Road.

At last the images faded and Elyen hid the sphere within the deep pockets of her cloak. "We must leave at once." She draped the folds of the warm cloak closer about her body. Unlike the Eldar, Elyen felt the chill of winter and the heat of summer.

"Where to?" Haldir asked.

Elyen gave Haldir a slow smile. "Where we wont for now, my beautiful elf." Her smile was enigmatic and Haldir frowned.

"I recall that when you smile thusly there is usually some trouble brewing ahead." He shook his head and crossed his arms.

Elyen laughed, "Be adventurous, my blonde Galadhrim!"

Haldir arched an eyebrow and studied Elyen sternly. "Adventurous is not what I would call it. What you have in design for these humans will not take place for many a season." He turned and parted the branches ahead of him, leaving the secluded clearing behind. "And I do not foresee your humans kindly being led by their collective noses. The Fitzwalters have bid us leave their home though we had seen fit to ignore their wishes. And what of Anstig Mote?" He asked, despite Elyen's good humour, Haldir was beginning to grow testy.

"What of Anstig Mote?" repeated Elyen.

Haldir turned a cold stare at the Maia.

"We are not going to Anstig Mote, Haldir. What must be must be without us. They must follow the course of events which is the will of Illuvatar." Elyen studied Haldir's back as he walked ahead of her. "You saw what the ithildin globe showed us."

Haldir stopped and turned to face Elyen. Though his face was concealed by the darkness of the wood, the anger in his voice was unmistakable. "And what of us, Elyen? What are we to do in the long seasons ahead? We cannot take the Straight Road for you say not all is yet accomplished. What are we to do but wait?"

Elyen stepped closer to Haldir and placed a gentle hand upon his arm. "Forgive me, my beloved. I have not forgotten the great sacrifice you have made for me." She saw the light of his eyes shine even in the darkness. "I have not forgotten Haldir." She repeated softly.

Instantly Haldir was ashamed. "No sacrifice, meluiel." His voice was gentle. "Forgive me, my Lady." He added, "for a vow I made and to that I hold." He brought her into the circle of his arms and felt her body melt into his. "I waited for thee, my love, and saw you sailed not, though the swan ships came daily into the harbors of Alqualonde. None carried you. I waited," He held her at arms length so he could look into her face, "I waited, hope in my heart never ending, until I could wait no more. Here I am, for you and will go where you go, follow where you lead." Dropping to one knee, Haldir raised the hem of Elyen's gown and reverently kissed it.

Elyen's heart melted for love of this great elf. She raised him to his feet and walked into his embrace, her head resting upon his broad chest, the steady beating of his heart matching her own. "It is one more hurdle of many I have had to overcome." She looked up at Haldir. "Not all is lost, Haldir, but we cannot interfere nor remain with these mortals lest they turn to us for counsel and then all would be lost. They must choose their path though all the roads lead to the one and same end, it is in the choices that they make that the future rests. We cannot remain here."

Haldir frowned, "Then if we cannot sail and we cannot remain with these mortals, then where do we go?"

Elyen smiled and leaned into Haldir to place a small kiss upon his lips. The suddenness of that kiss caught him by surprise and he pulled her back into his arms for a deeper, prolongued kiss, a kiss that told her how much he wanted her, how much he desired her.

Elyen slid her hands behind Haldir's back and began a slow, sensual caress. He moaned against her open mouth, their tongues and lips licking and sucking one at the other. Haldir's hands came up between their bodies and he captured a breast, his thumb and forefinger pinching a taut nipple. Elyen moaned and pressed more tightly into Haldir's body. He broke the kiss and began to lick her neck, mindful of the chill night air.

"I want you, meleth nîn," Haldir rasped, "I want all of you in my arms, beneath me, writhing in pleasure." He kneaded her back and she, unmindful of her hands and her moans, rubbed her body against him, loving the hardness of him, wanting him, desiring him and knowing that unless they took each other, there would be no peace for either one.

Elyen moaned again, this time more loudly, as Haldir suckled the taut peaks of her nipples, the wet material of her gown sticking coldly to her breasts as he first suckled one breast and then the other. She opened her eyes briefly, and she looked past him, into the green darkness that was the wood. She began to call out, in a whisper at first, hesitantly, but with each kiss, each caress, her voice grew stronger, as her desire flared. She meant to have him, she needed to have him or the fire between them would utterly consume her. She called out in words Haldir did not understand, though neither his hands or his mouth ceased suckling, teasing, nibbling or licking. She was at once in the circle of his arms and she she was not, though Haldir knew not.

Elyen cast her magic, the flow of her essence, about them and suddenly she lost herself to the kiss that Haldir brought, his mouth against hers, his tongue demanding entrance into her mouth, licking and suckling her, his hands searching and delving beneath her clothes, touching bare skin, delving into the moistness of her core. She panted as two of his fingers delved deeply into her and then she dissolved, amidst the kissing, licking and suckling, amidst the rhythmic movements of his fingers.

Haldir was a fire that consumed Elyen. His one thought was to have her, to love her, to thrust himself into her and bring her to the edge of reason, as she always did with him.

His hands roamed her body, his fingers plunging into the depths of her, with a rhythmic flow that brought Elyen to the edge of reason and then beyond it until she found relief and ecstasy at once.

Moments later, breathing heavily, Elyen kissed Haldir lightly and smiled into his eyes, "I love you."

Haldir smiled, catching his breath, his own desire yet to be fulfilled, "I love you." He answered.

Bringing Elyen into the circle of his arms he embraced her. Opening his eyes he looked beyond the top of Elyen's head. The shock of recognition caused him to put her away from him. Silently, he looked around him and then turned to Elyen.

"What is this?" His eyes cast about him. "What magic have you worked?"

Elyen looked about her and then at Haldir. Golden light played about his hair. She had almost forgotten the purity of the light of this Wood. She shook her head quickly. "Tis no magic, Haldir. It has always been here."

Haldir frowned. "This cannot be." He touched the trunk of the tree beside him. "This cannot be." He repeated softly.

Elyen took his hand, "Come, it is time for us to rest from the weariness of the world."

Haldir allowed himself to be led further into the wood, marveling but a little uncertain as well.

Time passed slowly for the lovers, lost within the magic of Arda, for magic there still was in the world. Haldir marvelled at the Wood they had entered, asking Elyen nothing of how this was accomplished, for in truth he did not desire to meddle into the affairs of the Valar and their designs. It was a time lost within time and they knew neither cold or heat, neither hunger or thirst.

"How is it that these great mellyrn grow here?" His strong hand caressed the trunk of the great tree.

Turning to Elyen he spoke again, "How can this be?"

Elyen came to stand next to Haldir, "This is a place of memory, for memories are never lost in time."

Haldir frowned, "I do not understand your words, my love," He looked up at the great trees before him, "though I know we are here, I do not understand how this can be. The Great Wood faded long ago." His eyes came to rest upon Elyen.

The Maia smiled, "But not in your memory, not in mine."

Haldir shook his head.

"Come, my elf, let us rest." Elyen pulled Haldir toward a small pond that skirted about a cluster of white alfirin and pale niphredil. They approached it and sat upon the soft grass. Haldir's face was still troubled.

"Elyen," he began, the Maia turned to him, "we abide here by the will of the Valar?" He saw her nod. "Then we return to Arda at their wont?" Elyen nodded again, silently caressing the pale niphredil that clustered to her right. Haldir cast a doubtful look about him, "This place does not exist?"

Elyen turned to Haldir and sighed, "Haldir, this place exists for the Valar will it so. All things bend to the will of Illuvatar, and if he wills this place to be then it will be."

Haldir studied Elyen's face. "But you have a hand in this for I remember your strange words ere we came to this place."

Elyen dropped her head on Haldir's shoulder. Instantly, his arm came around her. "Aye, 'tis true, I opened the doorway but this place is not of my making."

Suddenly Haldir understood. "This is a place for your kind, is it not?" He looked about him in amazement and a little concern as well, "this is the like unto the gardens of dreams of Lorien!"

Elyen laughed outloud, "My kind?" She repeated Haldir's words, "well, yes," she conceded, "in a way, they are like the gardens of the Vala, Lorien, though we are in no danger here." She laughed and reached up to tug at his hair, "we are not dreaming, Haldir!" Laughing, as if all the years of her long life had melted away in that one moment, Elyen stood and ran toward the edge of the pond.

"Come, my love," she called out to Haldir, her hand extended in invitation, "let us enjoy the wonders and beauty of this place, for soon, all too soon, we shall be returned to the Bent World."

Standing, Haldir walked toward the Maia, "There is only one beauty I desire here," He reached her in three swift strides, tugged at her hand until she tumbled into his body. He caught her and with a strong hand brought her face up toward his. The passion in his eyes was like a hot flame that burned her, though she knew no pain from its heat only desire and delight.
