Book 1 - Chapter 2: I Morė Lumbor (The Dark Clouds)

Aiya!

Here begins the tale of the Pentanath, with the gathering dark clouds...but who was to know that the storm raged ahead?

The Pentanath is a not a book of history, for history books there are aplenty. It is not a book of lore or myth, for many are the wondrous tales of the Eldar! Yet, none of these shall you find here.

The Pentanath is a journey of discovery and of mystery. It is a story of love and loss. It offers no answers, but raises many questions.

But, no matter into whose hands this tale falls, remember as you read it that its words are as true as the light that shines upon the world!

Know this: once, long ago, after the Valar removed Aman from the bent world, all paths, riverways and oceans to Valinor were sealed, save the Straight Road which could only be gained and traveled upon by the elves whenever they grew weary of Middle Earth. Yet still, did a shadow come to awaken and dwell in the Blessed Realms.

In the ages that came and went, while war was fought by the elves and their allies upon Middle Earth, the shadow grew stealthily in the Avathar, the Southern Lands of Aman. None knew of it, not even the mighty Lords of the West. Some say now that this was the will of Illuvatar, for shadow is a child of the light and lest evil be found within it who can say whether shadow be for good or naught?

When the time of the elves on Middle Earth had drawn to a close, they took the Straight Road to Valinor, until all of the Quendi passed from Arda, out the memories and historiess of the races of the bent world. No more did they return to the world and they passed into the realms of myth and legend.

Yet, no legends were these elves, the Exiles of Middle Earth, as their great Swanships graced the harbours of Alqualonde in Valinor. They came, heeding at last the call of the sea to sail for their new homes in Aman. On Middle Earth, their history had ended in the closing of the Third Age. But in Valinor, their story was but begun.

They brought with them, these elven Exiles of Middle Earth, their histories, their art and music, their craft and their lifeforce, so different from the culture of the elves of Aman. Not all was simple for these Exiles, for they had to find a place and manner of living that suited them and those of the Eldar who had long called Valinor their home. Some returned to the bosom of families long sundered, while others roamed the new lands, settling and founding new towns and villages, learning the politics and ways of their elven brethren.

At times, conflict broke out between the new arrivals and those long accustomed to the ways of old. But in the end, misunderstandings and animosities were put away as all of the Quendi began to learn what it meant to live together as one, something they had not known for long ages. Yet, not all of the elves wished to make room for the new arrivals from Middle Earth, and some resented them greatly.

Time passed....

For countless generations after the last elf departed Middle Earth and sailed the Straight Road to Valinor, did the Valar and the Quendi reside peacefully in Aman. But they had not realized, until it was too late, that other creatures also called this land their home.

Yet, because the power of the Valar is mighty and great, and their magic encompasses all things within the Blessed Realm, the shadow of these creatures were long kept hidden, away from the elves whom the Valar loved and cared for.

But strong and hidden is the will of Illuvatar, and some things cannot simply be ignored.

From deep within the Avathar there arose a creature of both light and shadow. It searched among the watery depths and whether the mighty Ulmo was aware of its existance only the Valar knew. Yet, it came, no myth, no legend, no dream, but a nightmare of need, want and desire. Longing to return to its eda, its soulmate, did it endlessly search the dark lands of the Avathar, where still slept the healed elves released from Mandos' care.

Here is the tale of those who journeyed past the Pelori, beyond the Shadowy Sea, to the lands where no one had dared journey, to a land called the Avathar. Here is the story of what became of the sleeping elves of the Avathar, their re-awakening once more to the light of the world, their return to life, and the unforeseen impact this would make on all of the Quendi of Aman.

Key:

Aiya = Hail

Valar = the Powers, angelic beings who watch over the creation.

the bent world = a term used to describe the world, Arda, after the attack of the Numenoreans on Valinor. The world was then "bent" or made round, and then Aman along with Tol Eressea, was taken out of the world. Only by sailing the Straight Road could one gain entry to Valinor, but once the world became bent or round, the Straight Road was open only for the High Elves. All other races would simply circumvent the globe.

Avathar = a region, south of Valinor, in the continent of Aman. Covered in shadow, the place where Ungoliant was spawned.

Mandos = a Vala who judges and maintains the spirits of the dead Quendi, until released from his Mansions.

Ulmos = a Vala who is Lord of the waterways and seas of the World and of Aman.

Illuvatar = the Creator Spirit, often called Eru-Illuvatar.

Suilad = Greetings
