The Pentanath: Adventures in the Avathar
A Posthumous Writing of the Watcher of Tol Eressea
Chapter 32: Book 6: - I Medui Peth'iphant (The Last Prophecy)
by Sienna Dawn

Aiya!

The tales told within the pages of this book draw not to a close, for the tale is not yet done, and much still needs be to be made aright.

Know this, then...

There is an old legend among the Elves, a prophecy that none understand and few dare to question. Upon it do the Valar remain silent, and none know if the prophecy shall come to pass or nay, for it is also said that none save Manwe and Mandos know of its truth. It is an ancient promise, and one which fills the heart with terror but also with a great hope.

Some say the words are but the words of Men, who live the span of their short lives without truly knowing what their true fates shall be. Some say that the words be the words of ancient truths that lie buried within the strands of the Quendi's quest for peace and tranquility. Though to me it matters naught which race spawned the words, through ages untold do they still live within the memories of the Elves.

And what is this ancient tale? What warning does it bring?

Heed then, the words spoken long ago, when the life force of the Flowering Trees still cast their living light upon the shores of Valinor...

"It is said that at the End of Days shall Melkor return to darken the hearts of Men and Elves. Then, at that time will the great foes of the Betrayer arise to power again and lead the Quendi against Melkor to his utter ruin and damnation. It is then, after death and war are no more, that the great light of Telperion and Laurelin shall be restored as it was of old before the poison of Ungoliant and Melkor's evil destroyed them. And when the great power of these trees cast their light upon Illuvatar's creation, shall all the roads and paths to Valinor be made clear and open again, and shall Men and Elves come to the Blessed Land, to taste of the fruit set there by Illuvatar from the day of creation, in fulfillment of his promise."

These then are the ancient words, though few realize that already have the shadows begun to part and much of what the legend portends have already been set into motion. Soon, will the ancient foes of the Eldar and the Valar return though their faces be unknown and their names never uttered before. They wait, marshalling their strength once more, plotting their return to darken even the Blessed Lands. And the fate of the Elves, and indeed of Men, rest in the hands of a few, though those few know not what awaits in the terrible days that lie ahead.

Be not of faint heart, for the words of this book have not yet all been written and the fates of Elves and Men have yet to be played out upon the verdant shores of Valinor and the murky shadows of the Avathar. Read on, brave ones, for as such shall your own fates be also decided!

Key:

The Flowering Trees: Telperion and Laurelin. The two trees of Valinor whose great light shone throughout Valinor, poisoned by Ungoliant at Melkor´s urging.

The return of Melkor and what this entails, the End of Days, the final destruction of Melkor, the redemption of men and elves and the final destiny of men is hinted at by Tolkien in his Book of Lost Tales II...

"For 'tis said that ere the Great End come Melko shall in some wise contrive a quarrel between Moon and Sun, and Ilinsor shall seek to follow Urwendi through the Gates, and when they are gone the Gates of both East and West will be destroyed, and Urwendi and Ilinsor shall be lost. So shall it be that Fionwe Urion, son of Manwe, of love for Urwendi shall in the end be Melko's bane, and shall destroy the world to destroy his foe, and so shall all things then be rolled away..."

Book of Lost Tales II, page 216, JRR Tolkien

"...so that those twain Turin and Nienori entered into Fos'Almir, the bath of flame...and so were all their sorrows and stains washed away, and they dwelt as shining Valar among the blessed ones...but Turambar indeed shall stand beside Fionwe in the Great Wrack, and Melko and his drakes shall curse the sword of Mormakil..."

Book of Lost Tales II, page 129, JRR Tolkien

"Were the Trees relit all the paths to Valinor would become clear to follow - and the Shadowy Seas open clear and free - Men as well as Elves would taste the blessedness of the Gods, and Mandos be emptied..."
