Two days after Legolas bound himself to Sadril, the work on the ship was completed and it was loaded with food, water and a few personal items each wished to bring along.
Legolas worked quietly, speaking only when spoken to. His spontaneous gaiety was gone and the light of his eyes was dimmed.
Gimli knew why the rush to leave and he felt partially responsible. On several occassions he had tried to convince Legolas to stay departure for a few more weeks so that he and Sadril could have a chance to overcome their difficulties. But Legolas had refused to listen, arguing that a few more days not weeks could mean the difference between life and death for the dwarf. And there was the matter that word had come to them that Sadril was planning to leave for Ithilien before the first snows came.
That had been the last straw for Legolas and he had hastened their departure.
Standing on the dock, Legolas looked back at the ship and then came forward to thank the Healer and several others they had befriended while in Mithlond. Of Sadril there was no sign.
Finally, the time to leave came and Legolas helped Gimli board and slowly the ship pulled away from the dock.
Legolas stood at the deck of the tall ship and watched the coastline, his heart breaking so painfully that he had to turn away and came to sit beside Gimli.
"What does the Straight Road look like, Legolas?" Gimli's voice was tinged with worry. What if he was not allowed to pass? He felt the three strands of hair the Lady Galadriel had given him. They were secure in his pocket.
"I know not, Gimli." Legolas voice soft.
"She did not come?" Gimli asked carefully.
"Nay." Legolas answered, lowering his head briefly, and then standing, "she did not come."
Turning his eyes toward the sea, his heart still called out to the one that was now his other half. To the one who had chosen to remain behind.

Sadril had watched the ship pull away from the coastline and knew at that moment she had made a fatal mistake.
Having poured out her doubts to the Healer who tended Nathor and who well knew her history, she had listened to his wise counsel. His words had made her see that the love she had nurtured for Nathor was a fulfillment of her eventual destiny. She was fated to have come to Mithlond, it was fated for Nathor to sicken and die, no matter how cruel that seemed. And just the same, Legolas had been fated to fall in love with her and bind himself to her believing himself not loved in return.
At first Sadril had refused to accept what she heard until the Healer had told her a thing she had not known, "Legolas gazed into your eyes and saw you not truly wedded nor bound. And that is why he allowed himself to fall in love with you."
That revelation had left her speechless, but later in retrospect everything she heard from the Healer made sense. It all fit.
Then she had made plans to have news of Nathor's death announced to the new King of Gondor, and with it the news that she had passed to the West.
Sadril now knew why her joining with Legolas had surpassed all the pleasure she had ever known before. She too had fallen in love with him, she too had bound herself to him that night. She had known it instinctively and it was the reason she had refused to let Legolas see her eyes later. He would have known.
As she raced to the docks to intercept him, she came too late and was held back by the Healers from throwing herself into the ocean.
Hysterical, she screamed Legolas' name until her voice broke and she fell exhausted onto the docks. Unconscious, she was taken to the Healer's Hall.
In her fevered state, Sadril called out to Legolas. Why did he not hear her?

They had sailed for three days. Fair weather and calm seas had kept their hope alive. But on the third day, Gimli spoke.
" 'Tis no use, my lad. Turn the ship back."
Legolas frowned, "Nay, I will not! Just beyond, surely the Straight Road will appear."
But Gimli shook his head, coughed and argued, " 'Tis no use. You are wasting your time, dwarves are not wanted in Aman."
Gimli came to the bow of the ship and looked at the calm water. "Turn the ship around, Legolas. Let me die on Middle Earth, not in the middle of this blue soup."
At the words, Legolas' heart started. Another tear in his spirit. Now he would lose Gimli. Could his heart take more, he wondered? Ah, but then the was Thranduil's son, and strength of spirit and a hearty faith ran in his family.
Walking past Gimli, Legolas turned the ship back toward the shores of Middle Earth.
~*~*~*~*~
Sadril startled from her meditation by the sea and focused her eyes. There, on the horizon, a speck, she frowned and waited. In minutes she was on her feet.He was turning back!
Running toward the marina, she shouted the news to whomever would listen and impatiently waited on the docks.
Back on the ship, Legolas was trying to get Gimli to drink some water. Coughing fits were beginning to come with increasing frequency and he knew this was a sign of deterioration of the lungs. Once the lungs failed the rest would follow.
Legolas held Gimli's head while the dwarf's body was wracked with coughing so violent it rattled his teeth. Legolas felt Gimili's forehead. Hot. The dwarf was running a fever.
His keen ears picked up the sound of a voice calling his name and he tenderly laid Gimli down on the small cot he had fashioned and came to look above deck.
Legolas looked toward the docks of the Grey Harbour and started. Were his eyes deceiving him? He looked directly at the figure who waved her arms. Legolas eyes widened in recognition and his heart skipped a beat.
Sweet Elbereth....it cannot not be! 'Tis a trick of the light and water, Legolas thought. Yet, he looked again and this time he knew for certain.
"Meleth nin!" He shouted uncharacteristically, waving an arm in response. She has not gone! thought Legolas elatedly. She has not gone!
Back on the dock, Sadril began to weep for joy, impatient for the ship to dock. Sudden worry flooded her mind. Why had he returned? Dread chilled her and she thought of Gimli. Worriedly, Sadril waited until the ship docked.
After what seemed an eternity later, Legolas' ship docked and Sadril's eyes locked on the tall blonde elf. She saw him gingerly step over onto the dock carrying the dwarf in his arms. Sadril's heart sank.
Approaching Legolas, Sadril dropped all of her defenses so he could read her gaze and was happy to see the shocked reaction in the depths of his deep indigo eyes.
"He is worse?" Sadril asked Legolas breathlessly. There would be time for other things later.
The dwarf's breathing was labored.
Legolas nodded, "Yes. And he has a fever."
Together they set off for the Healer's Hall and there left Gimli to be looked after. The Healers assured Legolas that a few days of rest, and with treatment, the dwarf would be strong enough to sail once again. Knowing he could do nothing for Gimli, Legolas let himself be led away by Sadril.
Exiting the Hall together, Sadril looked at Legolas. His face was set in a grim frown.
Placing a comforting hand on Legolas' arm, Sadril said, "Do not worry. It will be as they say. There are potions that will help the coughing and bring the fever down. Then you can sail again."
At her words, Legolas turned to face Sadril. His face was sad but for a different reason. He mourned for Gimli, and Sadril saw that. "For three days we sailed but did not find the Straight Road."
Sadril was at a loss for words. Aman, she knew, was the last recourse for the dwarf. And the Valar had refused to grant him entry. The dwarf was doomed. Understanding Legolas' grief, Sadril turned and hugged him to her.
Lost in her arms, Legolas closed his eyes and fought back the images of their lovemaking. He loved her so deeply he did not know where he ended and she began. He brought his arms around and lost his hands in her hair. Sadril smiled and looked fully into Legolas' eyes.
Frowning, Legolas studied Sadril's raven eyes and saw many things there. He saw love and desire, surrender and need. He saw himself mirrored there and at once understood. But while he was joyful, he also was leery and did not wish to misread the message he saw in Sadril's eyes.
"Meleth," He began, but Sadril hushed him by placing a cool finger to his lips.
"Nay, meleth, 'tis I who needs to talk and you need to listen."
Taking Legolas by the arm she led them both to her cottage.
After a warm fire was lit, and food and drink was shared, Legolas turned to Sadril, "What do you wish to say, lirimaer?" His hand reached out and caught a raven lock. "Do you wish me to show you how I kiss?" His eyes glowed a deep sapphire blue. One hand still played with a glossy raven lock, while the other cupped a full breast.
Sadril laughed, delighting in the shivers his words and touch brought her. "Oh yes, beloved." But she quickly stopped his wandering hands, "But first I need to explain something to you."
Legolas smiled, and caressed Sadril's chin, "That you love me."
Sadril frowned and smiled, the contact of Legolas' hands on her body was making it hard to concentrate. "Yes, that too...and that..."
"That you want me, passionately..." His eyes lowered to her mouth and he traced its contours. "That you desire my body, my hands, my mouth, on your body." Legolas' breathing was ragged.
Sadril was finding it impossible to concentrate, so she stood up, leaving Legolas frowning. "Legolas!"
From the floor Legolas smiled sweetly, "Yes, meleth?"
Sadril laughed and then looked at him somberly, "I came after you...but you had sailed. I was wrong..." she kneeled before Legolas and saw the surprise on his face. "Forgive me, for I did not realize we were fated to be together Legolas. I did not see how much you mean to me until you had sailed away." She threw herself into Legolas' arms with a sob and began to weep.
Legolas brought her to face him, a gentle smile on his face, "There is naught to forgive. When I first saw your face and looked into your eyes I knew no love had touched your heart. I let myself fall in love with you, Sadril, because your heart called out to mine."
Sadril touched Legolas' face gently, lovingly. "I love you Legolas Thranduilion. And I bound myself to you the night we first loved."
Legolas heard the incredible statement, having suspected it long before she said it, now needing to hear it nevertheless.
Bringing her into his arms, Legolas breathed into Sadril's hair, "Revia amin, meleth."
This time Sadril smiled and broke from his arms, smiling and winding her arms about his neck. "Yes, Legolas, I will sail with you."
Hugging each other, Sadril said in a small voice, "Legolas, weren't you going to teach me how you kiss hello?"
Smiling above her, Legolas closed his eyes, thanking the Valar for this treasure, and dropped his mouth to close over his beloved's.
Hours later, a nude Sadril lept from the bed, flying round the room, trying to evade Legolas' grasp, but he stood, as nude as she, on the center of the bed. At the right moment, he leaped and crashed into Sadril, holding her close as he pinned her to the ground, both laughing merrily. But Legolas soon dropped his head toward Sadril and greedily suckled a nipple, eliciting groans of pleasure from her.
While Legolas suckled Sadril, she had wriggled down his body, so that his loose hair framed them like a silken curtain of gold, and she was able to reach his engorged penis. Once she wrapped her fingers about him, she tugged and he arched his head back, letting go of the nipple he so leisurely had suckled.
Gaining the upper hand, Sadril pushed Legolas back to the floor and lowered herself beside him, dropping her mouth to nuzzle his golden curls and then taking him into her mouth. Not having to hold himself back any longer, Legolas let out a loud grunt and then a steady stream of moans as Sadril settled into rhythmic sucking, only pausing when he finally raised her off him and sat back, breathing harshly "I want to take you.." Pulling her onto the bed, he turned her around and entered her from behind, driving more deeply into her than he ever had. Sadril screamed with pleasure and then began to push back toward Legolas as he pushed toward her. Feeling his hands on her breasts she began to tighten around him and almost fell off him when he suddenly stopped.
"What are you doing?" She gasped breathless.
Legolas did not answer Sadril, instead he let his body answer for him, thrusting deeply into her and then stilling to move his hips in slow circles. Sadril gasped and moaned, and pushed back when Legolas again thrust deeply, ground his hips in little circles, only to repeat the maddening cycle over and over until Sadril was panting.
"No more, Legolas, please!"
Legolas smiled and reached between her legs and found her core and began to rub leisurely drawing a scream from Sadril. Once more she felt herself tightening around Legolas. Once more he stilled and stopped, waiting, kissing and licking her neck, buried deeply inside Sadril, feeling the walls of her body contract and relax around him.
"Oh! Elbereth! This is sweet torture."
Legolas only licked her neck in response and when he felt her relax, began the same cycle of thrusting deeply, stilling and then moving his hips in small circles. In this fashion he kept Sadril in a fury of sexual heat longer than she thought she could endure until she finally sobbed, "Please Legolas, take me completely...please!" And she sighed and trembled with pent up desire and unfulfilled lust.
Thrusting deeply into her, Legolas commenced a steady rhythmic movement, drawing her out only to bring her back in until he began to lose control and drove into her quickly, passionately, lowering his hand to her core once more, rubbing her until Legolas felt her contract around him, only this time he did not stop, and Sadril moaned in encouragement, her pleasure fueling his desire for her. Suddenly, they exploded in unison, their souls merging, touching and embracing, fusing into one, before returning to reality.
Spent, exhausted, Legolas collapsed on the bed, with Sadril's head on his lap. Looking into her tired eyes, he drawled, "Meleth, you have exhausted me."
~*~*~*~*~
Several days later, Legolas and Sadril convinced Gimli to come with them as they planned to sail and make for the Straight Road.
Looking heartier after the Healers' treatments and potions, Gimli finally agreed, grumbling but climbing aboard the ship as one fine frosty afternoon, he, Legolas and his wife, Sadril, sailed away from Middle Earth.
This time the ship did not come back and many are the stories that tell of the bright light that broke through the late afternoon clouds, filtering through with the power of a thousand stars as the tall ship sailed steadily toward it, and then disappeared from view.
~*~*~*~*~
But that is not the end of our story, for many are the adventures that awaited Legolas and his beloved Sadril in the Blessed Realms.
The heart wants what it wants.
