J4J7 Legal Dream Team

No first amendment event would be complete without an attorney on the other end of the phone during difficult stops. My first request went out to Don Wirtshafter of Ohio, whom I was first privileged to work with during the Ohio Journey for Justice. Don responded that he would be happy to be the backup attorney, but that we really should have an attorney in each state we pass through.

Therefore, we appealed to the Norml Legal Defense Committee.

Jim Greig, who believes we should have two attorneys in each state, introduced me to Mr. Lee Berger, who has agreed to 'escort' us through Oregon via phone. He also posted our request on the NORML Legal Committee list serve. We are grateful to Mr. Berger, Mr. Grieg and all the fine attorneys who have offered to be there for us. To the NORML Legal Committee:

Mr. Lee Berger kindly posted my letter on the NORML Legal Committee listserve yesterday.  I asked for legal experts who would be willing to be on the other end of the phone should the J3J7 run into a particularly difficult stop. As we've all learned, sometimes on a free speech event, a voice from the legal profession can mean the difference between moving on or being held back. 

I needed at least one attorney, preferably more in larger areas, from each of the 13 states that the J4J7 will be traveling through.

Fifteen Legal Committee attorneys responded with a positive 'yes'.  The responses were surprisingly quick and unexpectedly generous. I am pleased to report that 10 of the 13 states have been covered by at least one attorney, for which I am very grateful.

The remaining three states that we will travel through which thus far have no attorney backup are Georgia, Tennessee, and Arkansas.

For some reason, the southern states are usually the most difficult to maneuver. There's always a lot of cops, sometimes uneducated about the harms of the drug war and the rights of free speech - and often aggressively determined not to learn.  We have educated ourselves on our rights, but just knowing that a legal presence is available for us through these states will reduce our stress no end.

It is difficult to express how impressed and grateful we are for the positive responses from this committee. Thank goodness there are still attorneys out there who care so much about reducing the harms of the drug war, encouraging free speech activities, and minimizing the prison population. 

After dealing with so many lawyers in my prison reform work who take a desperate client's money and then retreat from the responsibilities, I have to say, the NORML Legal Committee has totally restored my faith in the legal profession. Thank you all so very, very much.
