Working on the side of the mountain was hot, hard, and dangerous work since they were high above the highway. The men worked on the very sides of the mountain, or the cliffs, and at first they had to use bolos (machetes) to cut away the brush and then create a steep slopping road by cutting away the sides of the mountain using only mainly crowbars and sometimes shovels.
