Genealogy

I have taken information from the Victorian censuses and parish registers to compile the family trees of many of the inhabitants of Fosbury Estate in the Victorian period. This has included trying to track them down both before they arrived there and after they left.

Fosbury had no church of its own until 1856, when the then owner of the estate built Christ Church, Fosbury (and its vicarage) across the road from the south lodge of Fosbury House. Prior to that the residents had to walk or ride to Tidcombe or Shalbourne to attend services, including family baptisms, marriages and burials. Strictly speaking Fosbury was in Tidcombe parish and Oxenwood in Shalbourne parish, however my research has shown that this did not always apply in reality.

Fosbury Chuch was declared redundant in the 1970s (although a few burials still take place there), so today's residents have to make the same trip, albeit no longer on foot or by horse.

See Families for a list of the surnames for which I have most information, either through large families or long periods of residence.
