A line, representing a length of wire, connects from the top, positive, end of the battery to the top of the resistor. Another line connects from the negative end of the battery to the bottom end of the resistor. There are plus and minus marks on the battery indicating that the bottom end is negative and the top end is positive. Similarly there are signs indicating that the bottom end of the resistor is negative and the top end is positive.
