Lucy's story
I have been very fortunate to have a beautiful blue
merle cardigan come into my life. When Genie Bishop told me she had a
blue girl in the fall
of 1996, I was already committed to be getting a tri color pemmie
later that year. I looked at the pemmie litter and didn't see anything
I really
want. Maybe it was the thought of that blue girl that Genie mentioned.
I called Genie to see if by chance she still had that blue puppy
and through our conversation, Genie felt that Lucy would be a good performance
dog though you ask her now and she doesn't seem to recall that part
of
the conversation. We arranged to see her at our breed club meeting.
Lucy, named after Lucille Ball as she had a very vibrant red skullcap,
sat
quietly on my lap the whole meeting. I think I feel in love that
night with her. Lucy seemed to fit in with my 2 male pemmies and she
let the
boys think they were in charge but I knew that it was really Lucy.
Showing a blue merle in 1997 was a tad hard as a lot of breeders told
me I had
a real nice bitch though she wasn't winning majors. But when Lucy
won, she would win big and finished at the Yankee supported show in Vermont
of 1998. I decided to breed her, as I wanted a nice blue girl from her. I had my eye on several lovely husbands for her. It was hard to chose who I thought would be best for her and looked to Genie to help me with my list. She mentioned BJ, Ch. Rhydowen I be Jammin, that lived with Debbie Richeson. With Lucy's timing, BJ became the best fit and when the time came, I immediately flew Lucy to Kentucky, Christmas Eve. Debbie took real good care of my girl and on Feb. 21st, 1999, Lucy waiting till I returned from my bowler's state championship to deliver 10 pupsters. We bookmarked a blue boy for Jan Marshall and I had 3 blue girls to decide over and then one was to go to Genie. Every litter is special, but I think your first is the one you will always remember the most. My nephews came to visit within hours of the pups being born and then ever weekend stayed over to love them to death. They were told constantly told that only 1 was staying. Lucy was a great mother, better then I thought she would be. She loved to wrestle and play with them. When it came time for Jan's puppy Rocky (CH Hedgerow Donnaj Blueberry CGC, CD, NA, NAJ, NJP, VC, Multi Group Winner) to go, my nephew Jeff wanted to say goodbye and he just hugged and cried over his puppy leaving. Jeff has meet Jan a few times and loves seeing how much Rocky and her are a great pair. In evaluating the litter, I had a lot of input from several people. We had a lot of nice puppies but they needed to go to good homes. I kept the blue girl who kept posing in the backyard and had the closest markings to her momma, so I could do a breed brace in Canada. Desi, UKC GR CH Am/Can CH MACH Hedgerow BJ’s Apple Pie HT, VCX, was my keeper and at her first showing took Winners bitch at the Western Reserve supported entry under Mrs. Clifton. This girl has surpassed any goals I could of dreamed of in the showing world. Michele and Fred Pinkett took a blue boy that they thought look a tad like a court Jester. Their Jester, UKC GR CH, Am/Can CH Hedgerow BJs CC Cookie Dough AX, AXJ, PT, VCX, allowed Michele to dabble in the showing venues. Now she has majorly got involved in the cardigan clubs. Genie took BB (Am/UKC CH. Hedgerow BJ’s Rum Raisin ROM Silver) and shared her with the Huffs with the promise if she couldn't finish her I would. BB is grandmother to a National Specialty winner and some top cardigans in the breed. Panda (GR CH, Am/Can CH Hedgerow BJ’s White Russian ROM Bronze) was shared by Genie and I and equally shown to her championship. I was very fortunate to have people that wanted to show and trust my judgement in selecting their puppy. We probably could of finished 2 more puppies from that litter, but their owners did not want to show the dogs. Litter two I was looking at this one dog to be Lucy's husband and talking with Kim Rauber/Shira(don't know what she is going by these days), she suggested her CH. Coedwig Vestavia Luminescence. When we planned this litter, Laser had only sired 2 litters. I politely called this my litter from hell, as they were very busy puppies. At 3 weeks, they knew when I was coming in the door and started demanding attention. Someone was always getting into trouble. Donna Lonnquist was looking for a blue boy and I felt that Yoda, Am/Can/UKC CH Hedgerow Corwynt’s Yoda CD, AX, AXJ, PT, VCX, Multi Group Winner, would be a good match. He was my top trouble maker and greatest little retreiver. I was holding onto the b & w boy that would just go back into his crate when he was done playing, till Susan Stephon came a calling. Sue wanted a boy that she could show in breed and she liked what she saw in this quiet boy, now Am/Can/UKC CH Hedgerow’s Black Onyx CGC, PT, MX, MXJ, CD, VCX and no he is no longer quiet. Fred and Michele Pinkett feel in love with Phoebe (UKC GR CH Am/Can CH Hedgerow Laser’s Diamond Cut OA, OAJ, HT, VC) at a show when she kept stealing hot dog treats from the basket. And I had talked a pet person into allowing me to show Am/UKC CH Hedgerow’s Black Opal, Droxy. I have a dog limit of 3 dogs and already had 4. Lucy's last litter was with Sire CH. Camelot's Midnight Rendezvous. Did I mention that Lucy has had terrible timing in getting bred. First was trying to fly her out Christmas eve and then coordinating weather patterns to bring her home. Second was trouble also fly her in and back from the stud's home. Well she outdid herself in litter 3 as she needed to get bred the Sunday of Labor day weekend and we did fresh chilled (almost with the wrong dog). We had the swimmers shipped on friday and implanted on Saturday afternoon. And then I had to pick up swimmers on tuesday, the week before 911 and fight rush hour traffic to get them to her. Timing was bad and we only had 3 puppies. I kept a gorgeous tri-color boy, Maverick (UKC CH. Hedgerow’s Midnite Maverick CGC, HT) but then Maverick decided he did not like showing. He is now loved by 4 children. Maverick's sister and brother also do not seem to like the breed ring but sister Sophie (Hedgerow’s Midnite Blue CD) went to Bev Knoll. Kathy Tanguay 's son feel in love with his boy Max, UKC CH. Hedgerow's Midnite Madness, for his juniors dog. Both are planning on playing in agility and possibly Rally. We had Lucy play in agility and herding in between litters. But if you have met Lucy, you would know that she is a big couch potato. It's hard to believe that Lucy had so many versatile kids. She has helped bring up some of her grandkids, she just loves playing with puppies. I got Lucy at 4 1/2 months and maybe if I got her early she could of been better in the performance areas. She seems too bashful to show her skills in front of a crowd. If I knew what I was doing, I think she could of gotten a Herding Championship but I have focused elsewhere. Doesn't matter, I will always love my Lucy. I could never of imaged that when Genie Bishop gave me a 4 1/2 month puppy at our Kennel Club meeting, that she would someday have wonderful puppies that would give her the title of ROM Gold. Lucy was named after Lucille Ball as she had a very vibrant red skullcap. She sat quietly on my lap the whole meeting. I think I feel in love that night with her.
