How to increase
Increase

In the afghan stitch in crocheting, the increases are always made while working the first half of the row (the row when you pick up loops and place them on the hook). It's wise to count the number of loops on the hook at the end of an increase row to make certain you have the correct number of stitches.

TO INCREASE a stitch at the BEGINNING of a row, skip the first up right bar, draw up a loop in the next bar; referring to the drawing, draw up a loop in the space (under the chain) before the next bar-1 stitch increased. Continue across the row in the pattern stitch, drawing up lps in each bar until 2 bars remain at the end of the row.

TO INCREASE a stitch at the END of a row, draw up a loop under the chain before the next bar-1 stitch increased. Draw up 2 loops in the remaining 2 bars.
