Welcome to South Pole Station

Entrance into the dome of South Pole Station
Entrance into the partially buried South Pole Station's dome is through a tunnel. Blowing snow is a constant threat to the station. A new station is being built with a jacking system designed to keep the building from being buried by the snow.

American flag and sign indicate locaton of the latest survey marker for the geographic south pole

Survey marker and flag serve as locators for the most current location of the geographical South Pole. The polar ice sheet is continuously moving downslope towards the sea. As the ice sheet moves, so do the survey markers (several of the previous years' markers located in a row beyond sign).
