Dress materials

  1. Tops/blouse :  4/5
  2. Skirts: 2/3
  3. Jeans/Trousers :  4/5 [This is the thing you probably would be wearing always!]
  4. Undergarments :  enough to last for a month without washing
  5. Sweaters :  1 full-sleeve, 1 jumper
  6. Woolycot:  1 [You really don't need this, as one is required to wear clothes in layers than a single thick and really warm one, but I think it is OK to take one.]
  7. Gloves:  1 pair
  8. Woolen cap:  1
  9. Muffler:  1
  10. Socks :  4 pairs
  11. Shoes (Bata Power) : 3 pairs
  12. Chappal (Sandak) :  3 pairs
  13. Belt:  1
  14. Sarees/Salwar:  a few only to wear during puja etc.

Other clothing-related items

Monetory things

  1. Travellers' Cheques:  (around $1500)

Medical things

  1. Allum (wonderful antiseptic!):  2

  5. Something (eg. isabgool) to prevent constipation

Culinary items

The microwavable bowls and the pressure cooker prove very helpful in the US.

Moumita also adds,

"All other culinary items are easliy and cheaply available in the US.So instead of carrying them from India you can get all of them in USA(I got some saying"made in India"!) However it is not always easy to find an Indian store immediately and one might not quite like the American food right away!So it is not a bad idea to have a packet of some common spices that you might put in your cooking!

"I am of the idea that everything is avilable in the US at cheap prices. (This is Moumita's viewpoint, some people terribly disagree!:-) So probably I would advice that instead of buying and carrying everything from INDIA, buy dollars with that and bring them over here!That saves a lot of hassels!"
