Large Bellies Indicate Double Or Triple The Risk Of Dementia |
People in their 40s with larger stomachs have a higher risk for dementia when they reach their 70s, according to a study published in March 26, 2008, online issue of Neurology , medical journal of American Academy of Neurology.
Previous studies have looked at central obesity ( as determined by waist circumference ) and body mass index in the elderly and its link to dementia risk. In addition, previous studies have shown that a large abdomen -- in midlife -- increases risk of diabetes, stroke, and coronary heart disease. This is first time researchers have demonstrated a longitudinal association between midlife belly fat and risk of dementia.
Capturing abdominal obesity in midlife may be a much better indicator of long term metabolic dysregulation that leads to dementia risk, said study author Rachel Whitmer, PhD, a research scientist at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, CA. Measuring abdomen size in older age people may not be as good an indicator because as people age they tend to naturally lose muscle and bone mass and gain belly size, she explained.
" Considering that 50 percent of adults in this country have abdominal obesity, this is a disturbing finding. It's well known that being overweight in midlife and beyond increases risk factors for disease. However, where one carries weight - especially in midlife - appears to be an important predictor for dementia risk, " she said.
" Autopsies have shown that changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease may start in young to middle adulthood, and another study showed that high abdominal fat in elderly adults was tied to greater brain atrophy. These findings imply that the dangerous effects of abdominal obesity on brain may start long before the signs of dementia appear. " She explained that additional research needs to be completed to determine the underlying mechanisms that link abdominal obesity in midlife to dementia risk.
Researchers studied 6, 583 people age 40 to 45 in northern California who had their abdominal density measured. Belly fat was measured by using a caliper to determine the distance from the back to upper abdomen, midway between the top of pelvis and the bottom of ribs. Belly density is highly correlated with visceral fat tissue, the fat tissue that's wrapped around organs, according to researchers. An average of 36 years later, 16 percent of participants had been diagnosed with dementia.
The study found that those who were overweight and had a large belly were 2. 3 times more likely to develop dementia than people with a normal weight and belly size. People who were both obese and had a large belly were 3. 6 times more likely to develop dementia than those of normal weight and belly size. Those who were overweight or obese but didn't have a large abdomen had an 80-percent increased risk of dementia.
Having a large abdomen increased the risk of dementia regardless of whether the participants were of normal weight overall, overweight, or obese, and regardless of existing health conditions, including diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease.
Non-whites, smokers, people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, and those with less than a high school level of education were more likely to have abdominal obesity.
As with all observational studies, it's possible that association of abdominal obesity and dementia is not driven by the abdominal obesity, but rather by a complex set of health-related behaviors, for which abdominal obesity is but one part.

uses of Zomig Zomig is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain, and other symptoms of migraines, including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light/sound. Prompt treatment allows we to get back to your normal routine and may decrease your need for other pain medications. Zomig doesn't prevent future migraines or reduce how often we may get a migraine.
Zomig belongs to a group of drugs called " triptans. " Migraines are thought to occur when certain blood vessels in the brain become swollen ( dilated ) . Zomig works by helping blood vessels in the brain to return to normal size. It may also block pain signals in the brain.
how to use of Zomig Read Patient Information Leaflet available from your pharmacist before you start using Zomig and each time we get a refill. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if we have any questions.
Your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Take Zomig by mouth, with or without food, at first sign of a migraine as directed by your doctor. If there's no improvement in your symptoms, do not take any more doses of Zomig before talking to your doctor. If your symptoms are only partly relieved, or if your headache comes back, you may take a second dose after 2 hours or as directed by your doctor. Don't take more than 10 milligrams in a 24-hour period.
If we have certain conditions that increase your risk of heart disease and we have never taken Zomig before, we may need to be monitored for rare but serious side effects ( e. g. , chest pain ) when you take first dose. Your doctor may ask we to take the first dose in office. See Precautions section for more information.
Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
side effects of Zomig Tingling/numbness, nausea, dry mouth, weakness, drowsiness, or dizziness may occur while use Zomig. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed Zomig because he or she has judged that benefit to we is greater than risk of side effects. Many people using Zomig do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:
Pain/pressure/tightness in chest/neck/jaw can occur shortly after using Zomig. These side effects are usually not serious. However, we may not be able to tell them apart from a rare but very serious reaction related to a lack of blood flow to heart, brain, or other parts of body. Therefore, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of these unlikely side effects:
Zomig may rarely cause a very serious condition called serotonin syndrome. The risk increases when Zomig is used with certain other drugs such as other " triptans " used to treat migraine headaches ( e. g. , sumatriptan, eletriptan ) , certain antidepressants including SSRIs ( e. g. , citalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine ) and NSRIs ( e. g. , duloxetine, venlafaxine ) , or a certain drug to treat obesity ( sibutramine ) . Before taking Zomig, tell your doctor if we take any of these medications. Serotonin syndrome may be more likely when we start or increase dose of any of these medications. Seek immediate medical attention if we develop some of following symptoms:
A very serious allergic reaction to Zomig is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if we notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:
This isn't a complete list of possible side effects. If we notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
precautions of Zomig See also How to Use section.
Before taking Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist if we are allergic to it; or to other " triptan " migraine drugs; or if you have any other allergies.
Zomig shouldn't be used if we have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if we have:
Before using Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:
Before using Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any condition that increases your risk of heart disease, including:
If we are at high risk for heart disease, your doctor may want to check your heart before prescribing Zomig.
Zomig may make we dizzy or drowsy. Use caution while driving, using machinery, or doing any other activity that requires alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages.
During pregnancy, Zomig should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It's not known whether Zomig passes into breast milk. Because of possible harm to the nursing infant, breast-feeding while using Zomig isn't recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
interactions of Zomig See also Side Effects section.
Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Don't start, stop, or change dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Zomig shouldn't be used with following medications because very serious interactions may occur while use Zomig:
Do not take MAO inhibitors ( e. g. , furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, tranylcypromine ) for at least 2 weeks before or after taking this drug.
Zomig shouldn't be used within 24 hours of the following medication because very serious interactions may occur:
If you are currently using any of above medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting Zomig.
Before using Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products we may use, especially of:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if we also take drugs that cause drowsiness such as: certain antihistamines ( e. g. , diphenhydramine ) , anti-seizure drugs ( e. g. , carbamazepine ) , medicine for sleep or anxiety ( e. g. , alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem ) , muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers ( e. g. , codeine ) , psychiatric medicines ( e. g. , chlorpromazine, risperidone, amitriptyline, trazodone ) .
Check the labels on all your medicines ( e. g. , cough-and-cold products ) because they may contain ingredients that cause drowsiness. Ask your pharmacist about using those products safely.
Cimetidine is a nonprescription drug that's commonly used to treat extra stomach acid. Because it may interact with Zomig, ask your pharmacist about other products to treat stomach acid.
This document doesn't contain all possible interactions. Therefore, before using Zomig, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products we use. Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.
