Based on the review of a couple of hundreds of sites, documents, and
texts, treating
the topic Les Arènes de Lutèce, by amateurs, scholars, historians,
researchers, and
scientists, this résumé of some tenths of lines tries to present what most
probably
happened in Europe concerning
this 20-century-old monument,
from a time before
it was built to present days, in other words during our civilisation life-time
that these
stones have witnessed. If only they could talk better!
Outside a small village to become much later part of Lutetia, on the somewhat lower slope
of an inhabited hill top, this mythic place was already a ”meeting
space” or “playground”
for some sort of ”ritual
activities” or “games” in ancient
time.
It was located there perhaps under the early Celts or “Celtes historiques”, probably under
the Hallstatt,
La Tène, Vix, and the Gauls era, that is to say long before the arrival
of the
Roman Legions in
52 B.C., during the Gallic Wars.
“Commentarii de
Bello Gallico” describing
these wars was written by Julius
Caesar
himself, and was therefore to be, through history, the matter of
discussions on many
points.
Nevertheless, the future dictator of Rome came with his army in this wet region by
the Seine River at
the time of the Battle
of Alesia. He saw it, and he did not like it, but
he left behind him a garrison,
most probably on some of the oppida
around the area.
Many researchers think today that the “Montagne Sainte Geneviève”, in the middle
of the
swamps of this marshy land around the Bièvre River, the Seine River, the Île de la Cité,
and the Île Saint
Louis, was more likely to be one of the settlement, dwelling, habitation
places of some Parisii
and Senones tribes, as well as Nanterre, Montmartre,
Les
Buttes Chaumont, and other “mountains” of this complicated and then flooding
wetland with many rivers, la Marne, l’ Ourcq..., and their many affluent
tributary streams,
making it difficult to invade and easy to defend.
These weaker Celtic
folks pushed from
East and North in the Parisis
plain by other
stronger Germanic
people mingled with them and made there a living success which
became attractive to the Romans themselves, until
new waves of Franks, Barbarians,
Arabs, Moors, English, Germans, immigrants from everywhere...
were also “magnetized”
Les Arènes de Lutèce were built there, roughly as they are now, but higher, during
the 1st
century A.D., and used during the Gallo-Roman epoch as an amphitheatre, a
Roman theatre
for popular plays, and as a circus,
mostly for gladiator and wild
beasts
combats, and for martyrdoms,
of course.
A first damage after some migrating folk intrusion,
a first rebuilding during the
early Middle Ages,
a part of the arena
used as a graveyard, filled in, up to what
was left of it, its stones used for building the Philippe Auguste Wall about 1210 A.D.,
not to talk about the surrounding houses, enough was still left of its ground
foundation
to keep its memory alive.
Its place is to be known by the end of the 17th
- beginning of the 18th
century, then
forgotten, though the neighbouring district is called Les Arènes, even today.
Many
searchers have tried in decades to locate exactly the buried arena. It
seemed to have
vanished mysteriously, some even saying the numerous saints who had been
executed there wanted so.
But in the 19th
century, it was discovered anew when digging for building the
Rue Monge, and when
the tram company was planning to build a depot on it.
Victor Hugo and his Société
des Amis des Arènes succeeded to save the remains
of the monument, and when the Couvent
des Filles de Jésus-Christ, partly built
on it, was demolished, digging deeper for restoration was started, and conducted
until the end of World War I.
Today, the gladiators’ fights are mostly played by children with their footballs
and basketballs, by often elderly men with their boules for the pétanque, by
musicians with their instruments, by theatre actors with their lines, by tourists
with their cameras, now mostly digital ones or camera phones, by in loved
couples
with their kisses...
The cages and passage galleries for the wild animals have been closed
with grill bars
but are still there, for the fantasy and pleasure of the imaginative or
photographing
tourists.
The gladiators, mostly male, but also female
gladiators, and the martyrs of both sexes
(see Dirce, Blandina...) were coming in and out through the two lateral side gates used
today freely and peacefully by the visitors.
But by that time, victorious gladiators came out alive, the vanquished
ones seldom
otherwise than dead, all depending on the crowd’s thumbs up, thumbs down.
(See also Vae
victis).
Reading the martyrs’
stories shows that they were given no mercy. After scourging,
raping by the soldiers
in the cages or through the gates, tortured, flayed, burned,
thrown to the beasts...,
they leaved the arena only in small pieces!
It is still definitely the oldest “building” of Paris and one of
the first larger stone
constructions in the whole
The Hotel des “Arènes”,
agences immobilières des Arènes and de “Lutèce”,
pub de Lutèce, and many other businesses
will provide you nearby with their
services for lodging, eating, drinking, and much more,
so popular are still both
names.
Food markets on this side of the 5ème arrondissement will not be far walking.
Here are some sites, documents, images, videos, and activities connected
