Crooks Looting Bank Accounts With New Trojan Tactic at Security Pipeline

Criminals using a Trojan horse are spying on British banking customers and

snatching money from their accounts, a security firm warned Thursday.

U.K.-based anti-virus vendor Sophos said that the Banker.aj Trojan horse

targets users of several online banks, including Barclays, HSBC, Lloyd TSB,

and Nationwide.

Once a hacker gets Banker.aj onto a Windows PC, it waits for the user to visit

one of the targeted online banking sites, then captures keystrokes to steal

passwords, and snaps screenshots of the online session. The info is then

relayed to the hacker, who can use it to loot and pillage accounts.

"It's like having a mugger looking over your shoulder as you type in your

PIN number," said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos,

in a statement."

The tactic is different from the typical phishing scams that consumers have

heard of, added Cluley. "People are increasingly aware of the threat from

phishing e-mails which direct users to fake banking sites, but this Trojan is

different. It waits until the user visits a real banking site and then surreptitiously

monitors the login process."

Bank.aj, said Sophos, isn't the first time cyber-criminals have tried out this

technique. In August, the security firm posted an alert detailing a similar scam

being run on customers of several Brazilian banks.
