In Japan, Sailor Moon is known as "Bishojo Senshi Sera Mun" which means "Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon" although in English, it's just known as "Sailor Moon". Woot.
(More or less. There are little horizonatal lines over some of the vowels. I don't know what they mean. That's informative isnt it?)

It started it's life as a manga (Japanese comic book) written by Naoko Takeuchi starting in 1992 and ending in 1997
(I guess there was a sort of prequel to it that had one of the characters in her orginal form)
Soon after, an anime (Japanese Cartoon) of the same name started running in Japan, and four out of the five seasons were dubbed into English and aired in the USA. It ran from 1992 to 1997 and there were 200 episodes
I know they were dubbed into other languages too... at least Spanish.

In 2003, they made a Live Action show called "Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon" Also known as PGSM

Starting in 1993 to 2005, they started making musicals of Sailor Moon, known as SeraMyu (sometimes with a space, sometimes not :)). There were two a year, although sometimes they were "Kaiteibans" which means revision. So same basic story, some plot and song changes.
Obviously, this is the version of Sailor Moon that interests me the most

the basic, barebones plot line is this: Many many years ago in a fantasy time, there was a Kingdom on the Moon ruled by Queen Serenity, who had a daughter, Princess Serenity (Moon people aren't terribly creative I guess)
The Princess fell in love with the Prince of the Earth, Endymion. Aparantly this was a big no-no, a sort of Romeo and Juliet thing.
Somehow, this relationship led to the destruction of the Earth and the Moon with bad guys and fire and explosions and stuff.
In her final moments of life, the Moon Queen sent her daughter and her court to the future to be reborn as normal children on earth.

In the "present", a normal fourteen year old girl gets a visit from a magic talking cat. The girl, Usagi (Or Serena in English), is lazy and a bit of a crybaby, and chronically late, but overall a nice person. And... she is "A Sailor Senshi [Soldier/Warrior] fighting for love and justice - Sailor Moon" ("Occasionally "a pretty soldier in a sailor suit")
One by one, the senshi (Scouts in English) from the other planets awaken. (There's one for each. Some play bigger roles then other)
And together, all of the gals work together to defeat evil people intent on conquering or destroying the planet, or the galaxy or Life As We Know it.
