An automated teller machine or automatic teller machine (ATM) is an electronic computerized telecommunications device that allows a financial institution's customers to directly use a secure method of communication to access their bank accounts, order or make cash withdrawals (or cash advances using a credit card) and check their account balances without the need for a human bank teller (or cashier in the UK). Some ATMs allow withdrawals funded by clerical staff in retail merchant locations. The clerical staff are not considered bank tellers. Many ATMs also allow people to deposit cash or cheques, transfer money between their bank accounts, top up their mobile phones' pre-paid accounts or even buy postage stamps.

An ATM is also known, in English, as an Automated Banking Machine or Bank Machine (Australia, Canada), Bancomat (Central and Eastern Europe, Italy and Switzerland), Cashpoint (New Zealand), Hole-in-the-wall (United Kingdom slang) or MAC (certain United States areas).

History

A mechanical cash dispenser, arguably an ATM, was developed and built by Luther George Simjian and installed 1939 in New York by the City Bank of New York, but removed after 6 months due to the lack of customer acceptance.
